View original topic: Remove - Install assembled engine + tranny
Max Welton Mon May 29, 2017 12:58 pm

This is the fresh engine going into my 67 fasty. The tranny came from my previous DD, a 68 square.

This time I'm going to try removing the old tranny / engine from the car assembled and then reverse the process with the fresh stuff.

That's an interesting way to do it. Let us know how it works out.

Hopefully the corners of the chassis are strong enough to lift the body. Should be fine. Car isn't rusty and the subframe/transmission/engine will be disconnected.

Well I'm not 100% sure on a stock pan, but we just did a rear sub swap on my son's car (took out the swing axle, and installed an IRS unit), and lifted the body using 2 jacks. His car has a 1x2 steel reinforcing tube, that's bolted and stitch welded to the pan in the cavity, to make up for not having a roof. This helped us out as we could literally put the jacks anywhere along the sides of the car.

You might try doing your lifting with a block of wood in the pan channel, or using the jack points (or maybe slightly rear of them). The perimeter of the pan should be pretty strong, but I'd add something inside it to keep from crushing the edges of it. But use 2 jacks, so you can get the rear lifted high enough to clear the tires (our biggest challenge too).

maybe take the wheels off and put the whole sub on a moving dolly. the flat one like this:

this can give you a bit more clearance. But I am not sure how you are going to balance the whole thing on the jack to raise it to the body...

My removal plan is to unhook the subframe, lift the car then roll the old sf/tranny/engine assembly, on its own wheels, out from under the raised car.

Installation of the new stuff is just the reverse.

The center of mass is only a little aft of the axle. Moving it is easily a one-person no jack effort. Put the transmission in neutral and move it around like a wheelbarrow.

Do you have a thread on the EFI set up you have going on there?. Looks clean and I would like to know more.

Sure.

Today i pulled out my first type 3 motor. Much more easyer than a type 1 and almost as easy than a type 2

I think the whole assembly will tend to tilt backwards. Wont it be dangerous?

Max Welton Thu Jun 01, 2017 4:31 pm

In my picture you can just see a piece of 4x4 wood under the engine. That will keep it from tilting much as the car goes up. And the front wheels will stay on the ground.

After I pass this kidney stone I'll give it a go. Pictures to follow.

I can confirm with Max that the entire assembly isn't too heavy on the engine side with the subframe assembly as he showed. I wheeled mine around without a problem. However, I did not install my assembly like Max plans to do. I just stored mine like that for a little bit. I was fortunate enough to have the body off the pan to attach everything first before putting the body on.

Unless you hang a type 4 engine off the trans.

Oh man that's painful! Hope your stone is not to big.

I hope "Pictures to follow" doesn't mean he's planning on showing us the stone....

LOL! Don't touch that dial!

PS: Ramva list alumni may remember a certain person sharing a picture of his fingernail into which he had drilled a neat little hole. Made me cringe a little.

Extraction completed.

To lift the car, I used a pair of 450 lb transmission jacks, one under each jack point. I was a little worried about the weight but figured lifting only the rear of the car without the engine/transmission/subframe should come in under 900 lbs. Since it worked it either was less than 900 lbs or I got away with it.

Here is my process.

Remove battery.

Jack the car up by the s/f with an ordinary floor jack. Take the wheels and the (split) rear brake drums off. Because type-3. ;-)

Unhook everything underneath.

I moved front to back, starting with the forward s/f pad (get all FIVE bolts), the brake hardlines, emergency brake cables, backup switch plug, clutch cable, bowden tube, shift coupler, heat control cables and tubes. Disconnect the fuel line and either clamp or drain. I clamped. Bad choice. Open all windows. Apply kitty litter.

Now put the wheels back on and lower the car.

Topside I started inside the car and buzzed out the four s/f to body bolts.

In the engine bay I disconnected the ignition, throttle cable, anti-torque brace (swing axle). Don't forget to remove the dipstick. And the engine-to-body boot. Ahem.

Don't worry too much about having left something connected. Anything you forgot will make you pay, perhaps involve a replacement search and generally prevent a happy ending. ;-)

Place the floor jack just under the engine. As the car lifts off, the engine will tilt down. The jack will catch the engine.

Start jacking, a little on each side, keeping the car reasonably level and checking for hangups.

That happy ending looks like this.

The car may now be easily moved around the garage on the wheeled transmission jacks for further depot level maintenance.

I stumbled upon this. Im so glad as im in the middle of doing a refresh on my sub frame, trans and engine. This looks so easy, and safe. Again thanks for posting
