| I think I ought to comment on the use of a 6 Volt starter and the fear that it will damage the ring gear. The Bosch starter in all aircooled VWs is a overrunning clutch type not the Bendix Clutch type fitted to most American vehicles . this means that the solenoid first pushes the pinion into the ring gear BEFORE engaging the starter motor. The Bosch 6 Volt solenoid will not damage the ring gear by engaging the ring whether 6 Volts or 12 Volts are applied to it. |

FYI this has been covered in detail. I do 12V conversions with alternator in all of our personal cars. Most have been upgraded to a 1600 or larger with 12V flywheels etc. My 65 still has a 1200 based engine as does the customer 63 that is on my lift right now.
My 65 has a "Wayne Johnson" hybrid starter as does another customer car that I had done a while ago. There are also other "high torque" starters out there that already have the 6V gear on a 12V starter.
Quick and dirty - if using alternator you need to change the stand - don't know about generators since I dont use them. Has to do with the base interfering with the alternator. Not a big deal nor expense to swap bases.
I do the wiper motor armature upgrades instead of the dropping resistor - I hate bandaids and its not a bad idea to go over your wiper assy and your wiper shaft grommets are probably shot anyway.
I am thinking the last poster is correct about the Bosch starters engaging before spinning, but I dont know for sure. The car on the lift works beautifully with the stock 6V starter.
Honestly, other than wanting to maintain originality, I dont see why you wouldn't convert a car that you drive. Better lighting, ease of using accessories and less hassle buying a battery, battery tenders or if you need. to jump the car. My exception is the 56 that I may acquire soon. I will convert that BACK to 6V since I plan to reinstall a 36 horse and it will be a show car with very limited driving and I want originality.
My 2 cents. |

6 volt batteries and battery tenders are not much of a hassle to purchase.
A six volt car can be easily and safely jump started by a 12 volt battery. The six volt battery will draw down the voltage from the 12 volt jumper battery. Ive jump started six volt car with 12 volts many many times, no problems with that. BUT a 12 volt car cant be jump started by a 6 volt battery. So having a 6 volt battery will actually increase your odds of finding a suitible vehicle to jump your six volt car.
Yes a 6 volt starter works fine on 12 volts, no ring gear damage so far, 25 plus years of use.
couple pennies here. |
