So all of a sudden I'm breaking belts. Is it belt tension? And why now after all this time?

Hi. Your gonna have to provide more data for anyone to offer guidance.
At a minimum, I'd ask things such as:
Any recent changes?
Pulley alignment
Pulley quality
Using correct amount of shims?
Belt manufacturer?
Engine stock of a fast accelerating engine?

No recent changes. Everything has been running fine for years. The belt was a bit tight though.
What could have changed?

I probably need to adjust the pulley. Are the shims hard to find?

Hi. Yeaah, check everything mentioned. Folks make comments about the quality of certain parts over another and I would endorse much of this. The chrome or china upper pulley's are crap. I don't buy into the german belt idea anduse the house brand O'Reilly's mexico belt 15355. Last a year or two, daily driven.
The shims are an easy find. I gotta box of them. Most old school air-cooled shops should also. Just gotta make sure you utilize enough so the pulley halves are tight when nut bottoms out.

So upon further inspection. The rear half of the pully is cracked and gel apart iPhone the loosening of the nut.

Hmmm...I see your problem.

Good job. When shopping for a replacement try and set aside low cost here, as cheapo's will need replacement soon. Remember this pulley spins at nearly 2x crank speed.

Didn't even notice the autocorrect. What a day. Now the remnants of the rear pulley are stuck on the shaft.

you can try walking it off with 2 large screwdrivers or resort to an iphone puller if necc.

I ended up using motorcycle tire "spoons". And now the belt I bought is too long even with all the shims out.

With oem style of pulleys a 15355 belt should work. It has for me for 20 years.
15355 equates to 15/32 inch wide and 35.5 inches long.
Wear does occur with the lower pulley and I've seen the aftermarket alt stand be a tad bit short.
