Ok guys, decided to rebuild the 2.1L. I thought about a subi swap, but wanted to retain the 2.1L, plus doing it myself I figured it would not cost too much.

The engine actually came out pretty easy. Didn't realize how heavy the engine was. Though it would have been lighter.

The engine had a bad lifter, but with 247000kms on the clock I figured I may as well rebuild it.

Here are a few pics of "Steve Green" He is quite the looker. For the engine I'm pretty much going stock. I was trying to get the Gowesty 2.2L rebuild kit with the crank and pistons, but it was taking too long so I'm going to reuse the stockers.

Hey guys, I got the oil pump out and have about .003" clearance on it. I think it should be ok to re-use. There seems to be two crowds where one says always replace, but then it its within specs why not reuse it? Wonder if an aftermarket one will really be any better than the factory one. Was thinking of Go Westy's high volume, but its sold out.

Inspecting the heads, I noticed they are AMC.

The VW801 tool is very handy for holding the crank.

Nice! Keep at it. This is one project you just want to keep muscling forward. Lots of moving parts.

If you still have the original stretch style rod 2.1L bolts you will want to replace them with 1.9L rod bolts and have the rods resized at the same time. You can get rebuilt exchange rods from Van Cafe and maybe others, which seems like an easier way to go.

A mild cam upgrade combined with the higher compression pistons as per the engines build for European sale can get you some extra HP.

Yep, I still had the original style stretch bolts, not good. I did some shopping around and Van Cafe had the best deal by far on a set of rebuilt rods, complete with new wrist pin bushings. The big end was machined.

I just put a set of those Van Cafe rods in my engine a couple weeks ago. Seemed like very good value to me.

Engine case is all cleaned and painted.

You can bring the oil pump back into spec. Might be worth reusing if it fits well in the case and if the gear teeth have the proper clearance and they aren't chewed up by contaminants.

I have been doing some research. Thanks for the idea on blueprinting. I did order a new one (german), but not sure if I'm going to install it. I'm reading about loose aftermarket pumps and I don't want that. I have about a week and 1/2 to get this thing together so time is crunching. If the new one is tight its going in, if its loose, then I will put the factory one back in and return the new one. On the next engine rebuild I'm going to spend more time (a plan it for the winter...)

So I inspected the heads, they looked really good. The valves were the ones that came with the AMC heads so I replaced the exhaust valves with new TRW valves and cleaned up the intake valves.
