My 74 thing starts from a cold situation without much trouble. However, after running for a while then stopping for 20/30 minutes it seems to struggle starting back up. This is backward to any past issues I've had with this and other VW's. Any ideas I can try?

Check the routing of fuel lines in the engine compartment. A fuel line maybe in contact with something hot(intake manifold preheat pipe, shroud, etc.) resulting in vapor lock.

Non Ethanol gas, if you can find it, might be a help. The alcohol in ethanol can cause vapor lock.

this may be a good read:

my 73 don't start well after a long 55-60mph run.
have to floor it and crank to get it to start.
when it's cold, it starts easy.
hope it helps,

Is it the starter cranking slow, or the engine won't fire?

Starter is turning fine. It just seems like it's flooded or not firing cleanly. Also smells very "gassy" right after starting. Once started it takes a few minutes to smooth out and then runs pretty well.

Stock solex carb?
Does it have the fuel cut off solenoid? Is it working?
Is the choke set correctly?
Seems to me you are getting too much gas for starting at hot temps. Those are two things I would check. |

The owners manual says to hold the pedal down 3/4 down when starting when hot.
