What fuel pump was original to the 1973 Thing? Is there a preferred fuel pump that is currently available, or are rebuilt originals available? Thanks.

Hi and WELCOME. As I recall the original fuel pump used on the type 1 engine for 1973 looked liked this here:
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113127025B

I say "looks like" as the original pump had a removable top cover where there was a cleanable screen. The other item is the original had the pumps pivot secured with 2 circlips.
It looks as if all, if not the majority, replacements will be like this. However a fuel pump from an earlier car or from the later alternator equipped cars should work.

Another concern you might wish to consider is many of the replacement pumps are putting out too much fuel pressure. This is well documented on the other sections here (early bug, late bug, bay bus, etc).

Some of these issues can be mitigated with additional work from the buyer.

Hope this works, Bill.

Just make sure you match up the correct pump with the correct pushrod
