What is the function of the thrust ring on the steering shaft, on top of the crush cage (? not sure that's what it's called)
#1 in the illustration. It just clamps to the top of the cage, and doesn't appear to have any reason to be there...?!
The only thing I could think of, is that maybe in a collision, it stops the cage from being forced up the firewall tube...?
Thanks

I believe it allows the "crush cage" to function, possibly keeping the steering wheel out of your chest. The upper column mounts (at the dash) are designed to shear too. |
