View original topic: Additional work with engine out

Hi, first time vanagon owner. I have a 91 vanagon gl that I will be converting to westfalia of sorts. My first project is to remove the leaky engine and replace with a rebuilt 2.1. Does anyone have any recommendations for things I should replace/look at with the engine removed? Any pointers welcome. Thanks in advance.

I interpret this as "other than engine work"... so here is my short list:

-Engine Mounts
-Trans Cooler (if automatic)
-Coolant Lines (all of them you can afford, I opted to keep my plastic lines and i installed GoWesty coolant pipe repair kit)
-Fuel lines

Hey thanks for the heads up. I hadn't considered the engine mounts but I am definitely going to do the coolant and fuel lines. I was also planning on looking at the clutch assembly (its a manual).

How many miles on the tranny? If high miles you 'may' want to consider getting it refreshed or at least looked at.

Radiator original? Many old ones are at the end of their life and should be replaced. They are pretty cheap.

As you are going to see this is a slippery slope and can easily get out of hand.... :D

here's what i did with my engine out while i rebuilt that:

- rebuilt fuel injectors, AFM, fuel lines, throttle body refurb with seals and clean switch area, repaint intakes, new idle control unit and valve

- new throttle cable, coolant lines and heater valve, radiator, engine grounds, battery cable, starter

- trans rebuild, clutch, slave cyl, clutch line, clutch pivot bushing, resurfaced flywheel, CV joints rebuilt, motor mounts replaced, SS exhaust, repaint engine bits and carrier plus tin, new shift ball and cup

- added oil pressure and temp senders to engine, gauge pod in ashtray

- stripped AC out, lines, condensor, wiring, ductwork. controversial but i love all that being gone, engine access is great and more headroom.

- brakes

- fuel tank lines and grommets

slippery slope indeed. these are 30 year old machines. be prepared to dive in.

I did all the above (except AC - my '86 came AC-free) plus rust remediation in engine space and above-transaxle area. Lots of yuck was hiding under the factory "insulation" above my tranny.
