Hello all. I'm trying to find out some info on my engine case. I think I figured out that it is a replacement case.
It has the "AS" with 41 stamped next to it.
The number is 043 101 101 A. It has "1M" next to the VW symbol.
Does anyone know where the country of origin was for the replacement cases? Thanks! |

¡Bienvenido a la Samba!
Sounds like normal markings. No idea re any significance to the "1M" next to VW logo.
Ans is: Germany, Mejico & Brasil.
I have Germy & Mex'skin universal AS41s, but only the Mexy case is so marked in large letters.
The Brazzy should read:
2BR VW BRAZIL
043 101 101A
AS41
Mexy is very similar, iirc. This shamelessly raided pic is of pretty typical markings:

AS41, of course, refers to the magnesium alloy used.
Replacement blocks were sold to anyone who would buy them.
Some Mexican and Brazil examples.

What other numbers are stamped on the engine case? |

The only other stamping I see is above the 43 it has a backwards "C" followed by 43 and a forward "C".
The driver side has 1M by the VW stamping and the drivers side has 2M.
There isn't any country stamp like glutamodo posted, nor an Audi four ring symbol. |

You don't see very many German AS41 cases (the ones with no country marked under the pushrod tubes) that are blank for a serial number under the generator stand. They do exist, but not very common.
Put some photos up of what you have, if you can! |

Any possibility it's a Type 3 case? Is there a serial number stamped along the top side of the case, roughly under where the carb manifold center is? |

It could be. I really don't know. It's a '65 that one of the previous owners had Car Craft build a new motor for (1915cc).
I can't see any numbers from the top side. But it's pretty hard to see anything really. |

Well, the 043 series of part numbers I don't know if ever got applied to anything on the type 3, which was winding down production about the same time as 043 started showing up.
But I did wonder after I saw the oil filler blockoff plate on there.
Anyway, the late type 3s had their serial numbers like this:
