So, you remove the heads then the jugs and finally the pistons. Once you can actually grab a connecting rod, how much play is acceptable?

Should it be ridgid or a little slop side to side?

Thanks..

There needs to be enough clearance for oil to get in, so there should be a little bit of play, both side-to-side and up-and-down. If you're really that concerned about it, just grabbing the rod with your hand and giving it a jerk is not really the best way to determine if everything is within spec (and when I say rod, I mean the connecting rod, you bunch of pervs!). You'll need to split the case and get in there with some proper gauges for that. Sorry, I don't know the side and bearing clearance specs off the top of my head, but any breakdown manual will have them, or maybe someone here can give them to you.

Good luck, man.

Axial play on a new build, rod to crank clearance 0.004"-0.016" by the book.
Wear limit 0.028". Again by the book.

Great info.

Headed out to install some dial indicators and see what we get.

Thanks
