I doubt it's the Airtex pump going bad. Did you inspect/drain the tank to get rid of any crud accumulated at the bottom? You can filter your gas through cotton cloth & reuse it usually.

Hey Mike-

Currently has a bosch 3 port rebuilt by Jim A. in the car. I got the Airtex but have not swapped it out yet. Tank was cleaned by a radiator company last year so should not be a crud issue. May have to look into that as well to be 100% sure its not a clogged filter or something silly like that. All fuel hoses replaced in last year as well.

Try swapping in the airtex pump, and see how it works. There's really no reason to run the stock pump unless it's for a concourse show.

the saga continues....

SO I got up early today excited to swap out the Bosch pump for the E2000 I bought. I figured I would test pressure of Bosch and was reading about 18lbs no matter how far out I turned the regulator.

So I got the E2000 installed and followed a diagram here pressure side is wire and suction the other. Bathed a bit in fuel eliminating the 3rd hose and put the return straight back to the tank as the diagram shows.

Went back to start the car and watch the gauge and nothing not even a blip. I have power to the pump and get a 2-3 second pulse upon turning the key then power when cranking. I thought maybe I flipped the suction and pressure sides but I quadruple checked and I have all of that right. FML

At am out of time for today but here are my thoughts

- bad pump?
- Completely clogged filter which I did not replace but was done last fall and should get some pressure even if clogged.
- low voltage to pump? I was only using a test light and did not verify voltage at the pump.

If all you were getting was 18 psi, then that pump isn't making any pressure.
Nothing like a gas bath in the morning to make your day.
If the airtex pump is wired correctly, you can hear it run (even in reverse), as it's loud enough. This means if you can't hear it, check your voltages. You might even try jumping the relay under the dash to make sure you have power to the pump. You can do this either at the relay itself with the key on, or from the wire out of the relay to the pump and the other end to the fuse box on an always "hot" terminal. It could even be a bad ground connection.
I'd change the dirty filter for sure. If it looks dirty, it probably is. Not sure if fuel was flowing out in a steady stream when you swapped pumps or not. But it would tell you how much is flowing thru the filter.
A bad pump is a possibility, but check for power 1st.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Bob I appreciate the help.

I will verify voltage and bypass dash relay like you suggest. I was under the car and while a friend turned it over just so I could hear the pump run and I could not. When I held onto the pump I felt the first pulse when key was turned on then a similar small pulse when he cranked it over but it did't seem to do much more that that. I will have some more time later this week to get back under there. Now only if it broke down where I had it stored all winter because he has a lift. At my place its floor jack, jacks stands and asphalt :)

Well that sounds like a better place than either the lawn or gravel driveway where mine seemed to fail.

I got really lucky.. I was about a 1/4 mile from my house when it just about stalled out. was all I could do to keep it running, I pulled down a side street and it nearly died there. Then in one final gasp of fuel I was able to get back on the street and basically coast to my drive way and it didn't want to start again.

One step forward...

Today I jumped the pump to constant power on the fuse box, the airtex still wasn't running..put my vom on the leads and sure enough I had voltage (11.6). The other Airtex arrived this AM so I hooked it up still on bypass and it ran as expected. I used this set-up to help me set the fuel pressure which I set at 29lb.

Next I put the relay back inline and fired up the car. It ran rough sputtering and wouldn't stay idling. At first when I kept my foot on the pedal it would rev up nicely but once warmer it fell apart again and wouldn't idle or even let me rev it anymore without coughing and stalling out.

I pulled the #2 plug and it was sooty so I swapped them all out. It had WR8AC plugs in it and I put in W8Ac which I have on hand. I took some time and checked and cleaned connectors at the injectors, MPS, AAR ,TVS and cleaned the grounds at #2 and by the AAR. I haven't' pulled the intake plenum to check the grounds under there yet.

I haven't made any other adjustments so it confuses me how this car when from running pretty well (albeit only about 60 miles) to not being able to idle now.

Decided to go back through the basics this AM

- set valves .006 where a bit loose
- while doing valves I noticed T-stat was toast(fully expanded) and I had another good one so I swapped that out.
- Also noticed transmission ground strap was cruddy so I pulled that and cleaned it and two spots it mounts to as well.
- Took another CHT reading 2600 cold
- cleaned FI connectors
- pulled the distributor to get a good look at the trigger points- one screw was a bit loose, they look brand new but cleaned contacts removed old grease from distributor shaft and re-lubed rub blocks on trigger pts reinstalled set timing static at 0.
- Took a very small Flathead after reading some more posts on here, and closed down the 3 connectors to the trigger pts. so. turned the key and she fired right up !!!
- Turned the idle down to about 850-900 and checked timing with vac hose off and plugged.

EDIT: also changed oil

Now I just need to get back under the front and fully secure the Airtex pump and I will take it for a ride.

Just got back from a 20 mile ride and the car is running great now.

Great job. Nice way to stay after it and get it running. =D> Sometimes you just have to go back to basics.

Update:

I have driven the fasty about 1500 miles since getting it running reliably. I have driven mostly on back roads some stop and go commuting and seeing MPG averaging around 22-23. Father's day weekend I did a longer trip all highway going 60-70 MPH and when I refilled I was a bit surprised to see I averaged about 24 MPG

I monitor tires pressures a lot due to a very slow leak in one and run 28 rear 22 front.

Fuel pressure is at 28 PSI and I'm wondering if I bump it up a bit will that help get mileage higher? is 28 too low\rich perhaps?

You could try bumping it to 29, but I'm not sure you'll see any increase in fuel mileage. Tire pressures sound good though, and mileage is usually always better on the highway.

Congrats on getting 1500 miles out of it so far. Sounds like things are working like they should. You might want to do a long run, then come back and check the CHT sensor (ohm reading) and see where it's at. You might need to ballast it. Also, I'd just go over everything 1 more time (kind of fine tune it), just to make sure everything is kosher.

Thanks again Bob

I hate to mess with it at all it runs so well. FI cars are so damn nice when running well. Smooth even power and just a flick of the ignition and its running even after sitting a week unlike my carbed ones.

I'm planning a longish ride over the 4th up to NH that should be a good time to test it out.
