Got off the highway shifted in 3 now will not come out of 3 gear. Any good transmission shops around Trenton (Toronto) Ontario Canada.

Before suspecting transmission I would check out shift linkage - much more likely something there has come apart.

Will it shift with engine off?

Pray that it's a linkage problem..... But keep in mind linkage problems usually affect shifting to ALL gears. You could easily have shift linkage problems in addition to a cracked 3-4 slider. Be careful in concluding a shift linkage lube etc has "solved" your problem. You should do some detective work before driving that van.. Look at your drain plug magnet, if the hub is in really bad shape it may have some hub particles stuck to it.

The Vanagon trans, before year 1989.5 has a problem with the "3rd/4th gear hub" also called the "3-4 slider." If you have a big engine, and if you 'lug' your transaxle - cracks will come sooner.

This hub lasts something like 125 to 175,000 miles then starts to crack. There are 3 places the hub cracks. When it has just one crack, you have no problems and you will never know. Except with this crack, the other two locations are much heavier loaded, and the problem is worse. When it develops the 2nd crack, it might have shifting problems in 3rd and 4th gear. When it cracks in the 3rd location, you HAVE shifting problems and are in imminent danger of ruining a whole bunch of other necessary parts. Note this is a simplification of the hub cracking progression but not far from reality.

Here is a pic of a 3-4 slider hub that has cracked in such a way that it will be difficult to shift in 3rd and 4th. 1st and 2nd is unaffected. Note that even hubs manufactured after 1989.5 have cracked, but cracking is not a certain as the older hubs.

Will not shift out of gear when stopped. Manage to drive it home in third ran fine
no clunks or whine. Thanks for info Sodo, this trans. has over 400,000 K on it so time for a rebuild. Just got to fine one in Canada I hope.

Maybe check with Ben at Ben's Place.
He's a great French VW mechanic who might be able to recommend a good shop to rebuild your transaxle in eastern Canada.
