According to this Forbe's story there is no replacement for the New New Beetle--Is that it for the iconic shape on our roads? If you call the New Beetle iconic. There aren't as many old Bug fans out there to merit a return to air cooled but I hope VW will surprise us with a different direction in electric or fuel cell and call it a BUG.

The latest issue of motor trend magazine has an article telling everybody just exactly what’s on their (vws) mind.........more pics of the electric type 2 and promises to build

The CEO of VW, needs to pull his head out of his a** and build what the people want to drive.
A rear engine, new beetle like the one in the photo would help sales in the U.S.market.

The insurance companies would kill it.

The car does not have any practical purpose and that is why it does not sell. RIP.

Auto makers in the U.S. have been conspiring against VW since the 80's when vw started making diesel cars and small trucks that got 50mpg.

VW can't sell that awesome pick up here in the U.S. , because of the chicken tax. :x

Yes, there are ways to avoid it, if they wanted to put in the effort.
Mercedes avoids it with their vans by shipping them over in kit form and assembling them here.

Ford does something similar too with their little Panelvans

That's just insane. I've been waiting years for someone to import a passenger van similar to the Caddy to the US (the Transit Connect is a little too large), and here is Ford actually doing that and then shredding the passenger components. :(

There were rumors that they were bringing the Amarok to Tennessee, but it ended up being the Atlas :( I too would love to have a VW Pickup. Might have to settle for the new Ranger or hold out for the new Microbus in 2022

Then what explains all the people doing a single person commute is a truck/SUV? Other than stupidity. And insurance companies don't seem to be killing off any cars with 350+hp, and anything with less than 400hp and rwd isn't even considered "sporty".

How is a BRZ "practical"? VW just isn't going to build and bring to the US anything that really doesn't fit a certain corporate policy. And right now in the US, unless it's an SUV, it isn't worth bringing and trying to sell.

VW had planned to do a third generation of the "New Beetle" It would have been built on the MQB chassis and it would have been an excellent car. Unfortunately, the TDI situation made them pull the plug on several small volume but worthwhile projects. The Scirocco replacement, 3rd generation Beetle, Passat-sized Eos replacement, and 2nd generation Phaeton were all casualties of this belt-tightening. The Golf R400 was also nixed, and 2 door versions of the Polo and upcoming Audi A3 were also cancelled.

Some of these I care about more than others - I would have loved to see a 4th generation Scirocco, another New Beetle, and the Golf R400. But I'm just glad that so many of the VWs I like are still available and have a future.

VW is huge in South America with offerings that made me envious. These sweet cars and pickups go back 20 or more years and sell like hotcakes.

VW does not have a problem - we do here in the USA and Canada! Our heads are stuck in the "protectionist" sand, we value our domestic fuel hogs over the practical fuel efficient cars the rest of the world is welcoming with open arms.

Our loss!

Do not forget that we have pretty stringent crash and environmental laws.

I still say, if ANY manufacturer wanted to bring ANY vehicle in the USA, they could but there is a financial reason why they do not.
