Does anyone know the meaning/reason/significance of the number stamped on my 71 Ghia? Located above the fuel tank mount, on the passenger side. See picture (above 1st hole on the left... zoom in... 245 9005)

Thanks

The numbers positioned at the top is the week and the day of the week of built of the body
For you 245 -> Week n°24 and day of week n° 5
With the chassis number in addition we can know the year of built
If you Karmann was built in 1971, the body was built June 14, 1971
The numbers positioned at the bottom is body number.
For you 9005

I just looked at my '71.

These are my numbers:
213 Would this be 25 May 1971?
9148

It looks like my production date is earlier but the body number is later.

The last four #'s are a control number. They only have 9,999 options available and then repeat.
I haven't a clue exactly how they used that number. Did they reset to 0,000 or did they use some sort of limited digit system.

My `71 convertible has 253 9016, one day after my birthday!

Very close to your Ghia.

djkeev Mon Feb 19, 2018 4:33 am

Wild guess but.....

Everyone that posted has the four digit number starting with "9”..... a low 9000 number..........

Is it possible that the "9" indicates Karmann Ghia?
If so, did it reset everyday back to 9,000 along with the date change?

Is it possible that "nodents" with 9005 was the fifth car made that day?
That "jbassman" with 9016 was the sixteenth?

Maybe each model was assigned "X" digit to indicate that a part is a particular model?

If you have a ghia, post your numbers, this list thus far is way too small of a sample group to pull conclusions from.

This sounds very plasuable.
Being the "fifth" one built that day I guess would ensure that the workers were awake enough to do it right! Coffee should have kicked in by then.

From March 1969 all the body numbers or control numbers begin with the number 9 and has 3 digits after

Good to know, but were the numbers reset everyday? Every week? Every month? Every shift? (Unlikely)

Were they putting out 100+ Ghia's a day?

My data base isn't complete enough to answer your questions.

But if forum members are ready to help me to enrich my data base, by giving the VIN with the body number, I am interested :D

I have two Ghia's....... sadly neither running....... first a 74 Super Vert muscled his way in Oct 2010....

and then an 86 Vanagon Westy pushed Super Vert out in Oct 2012......

They both sit outside neglected and worse for the experience!

First the 69 Sedan, I am the 3rd owner but the 2nd owner never drove it.

ID plate

Body stamp
2C 1C5

1970 Ghia Convertible.... only God himself only knows how many had this wreck before me! I dragged it out of West Virginia one Winter many moons ago..... Dang! New Years week 2010!

Body stamp
231
9014

Just adding to the knowledge base about our Ghia's origins.

My VIN is 149863903
My body is stamped
73
9208

I recall my '70 had a silver sticker on the doorjamb that had the producton month, but my '69 doesn't.

I believe 149... makes it a 1969 Ghia.

It's correct.

From August 1964 the third digit of the VIN designates the model year
exemple
145 000 0001 Model year 1965 (August 1964 to july 1965)
146 000 0001 Model year 1966 (August 1965 to july 1966)
147 000 0001 Model year 1967 (August 1966 to july 1967)
148 000 0001 Model year 1968 (August 1967 to july 1968)

etc................
