56 Euro Lowlight |

I just picked up this 1956 Euro Ghia that has been sitting in a garage up on jack stands since 1991. I would really like to find some experts on 56s. Seems like a lot of the things I find on the forum here were posted some time ago and the people that posted used photobucket and the pics are not showing up.
This car has a headlight switch on the side of the steering column that the previous owner said was a factory item that can flash the headlights etc. It appears to be a factory item but I can not find any info about it. The car is a factory euro car from what I can tell, but Im no expert on these cars. Ive never owned a lowlight before.
The car does have a Km speedo, euro hella headlights, euro taillights (both of these items were in the trunk) and it has what I assume is a German dealer tag on the front fender?
Im having a very hard time finding much info at all about 1956 specific items like the interior. I believe my car is a factory black car with gray interior but I wont know I guess for sure until I receive the birth certificate which I ordered last night and the page said will take 6 months....I would love to see some detailed pics from a 56 gray interior.
A few other questions I have:
What do the headlight rings on a euro car look like? Am I missing the rings or??
What color should the turn signal lenses be on a euro car? One of my clear lenses is a little longer than the other. I think its been tapped on one side in the past.
I would love to talk to anyone who is a 1956 expert, Im really trying to learn as much as I can about these cars.
Here are some pics of my car, any info you guys can tell me about my car I would REALLY appreciate!! Thanks guys!!!

Congratulations on your find, you did well, lots of people looking for similar cars, just shows they are still out there..
Certainly looks to be a Euro car looking at the German dealer badge,Km speedo.
I guess when it made its way to the USA the lights were changed to U.S. spec, the headlights on the car are sealed beam U.S. spec assemblies, clear front lenses and all red rear lenses.
Euro headlights take a bulb, not a sealed beam unit, also the rims are wider.
The column switch is a period accessory I believe.
Some Lowlight info here

Euro/US rings - Euro rings are wider.
Euro H/light assembly
Interior for a black 56/57
Also spend some time looking at Patricks website, lots of info there..

Impressive find! Your remnant engine compartment sound insulation on the right wheelwell hump- the "corduroy" style material- was only used on '56, and possibly '57 Ghia (and on same year Beetle, though of course a different shape). Very rare... don't know what people have done to make a close copy.
Have you got the engine running meantime? |

Your taillights might be one piece from 58-59.
They should be two piece, lens and ring. |

VERY NICE!
Not sure if it was mentioned but the rubber rear strap was mounted on the package tray and the seat had a round pin/post that the strap would attached to. I have a 1958 VW dealer parts book. So let me know if you have any questions.
Additionall (TO ALL GHIA FOLK). I have been collecting parts for 30 years and I will not be restoring any more ghias. Mostly NOS or super rare I have about 1000 parts. Let me know what you hare looking for as I am starting to dig that stuff out.
Thx,
Scott |
