With the high cost of gas these days, I think many of us would like to know how much others consume. Please state:
Year
model
engine
trans
mods
tires
etc |

1987 Vanagon (Full Camper)
2.1l engine/auto trans
no mods done
michelin ( i think?) tires
on 14 gallons i've averaged about 200-225 miles
which works out to about 16/mpg
The $$ spent on gas compared to my jetta hurts - but when you get there and pop the top its OH SO WORTH IT :D
:)

1981 Vanagon Air Cooled with brand new 2.0L Fuel Injection (Stock). About 18 MPG in town with the Air Conditioning off. Have not taken on highway, but would expect around the same (all of my previous F.I. VWs have gotten the same highway and city MPG) |

I guess I should answer my own thread:
Year 1985 182K miles chassis ?? miles on replacement used engine
model Westy
engine 1.9
trans automatic
mods none
tires 185/14 - stock
I get 17 mpg combined for the last two tank fulls. Seems to run just as it should. This mileage is with the van lightly loaded. I am not a lead foot either. Is that why people flip me off and honk? |

16.2 MPG Avg on Mostly Highway, Best run so far is 17.38 MPG.
Year 1986
model VanagonGL
engine 2.1L
trans Automatic
mods Just my driving habits at this point
tires Stock, Do not remember brand, but stock size
etc Love the car, hate the mileage, but better than some cars I know.
I keep the air pressure up, my foot out of the gas, I run chevron or injector cleaner every 4 tanks, And I try to keep her clean.
I try always to keep the windows closed, unless it is just too hot. Also use longer following distances, so I can keep a steady speed, and plan ahead.

the PO had that installed. you can order them from europe and shipped, not cheap at all. kind of like parts from south africa... a few years back when the rand was weaker, it was worth it to contact friends and ship stuff, now the rand is too strong to make it worth while. just fly over and get it yourself :D |

Being cheap, I opted for a diesel, being retired (poor) I keep my speed down. I have an 1988 turbo Jetta Diesel installed in my 82 Diesel Westy.
Running 195/75 x 14 michelin LTX at 42 psi. Keeping my speed at or below (50mph) I get 30.3 mpg consistently. One long day doing 2900 rpm (48 mph) with a 20 mph tail wind in Saskatchewan (flater than a pool table) I broke 36 mpg after covering 374 miles. I doubt I will ever see that again. I laughed so hard in disbelief I had to get my wife to verify my calculations. And that's being a fully ladened Westfalia topping out at 4,400+ lbs. The worst I get (@ my top speed of 56 mph) is 27.5 mpg.
Mind you my GPS indicates these distances are optimistic by 2.5 - 3 %; still it's impressive even allowing for that.
So switch to Diesel and slow down and enjoy the scenery.
My last Westy a 1984 1.9 wasserboxer AUTOMATIC got 23.2 mpg also at 55 mph or less until my engine job then it dropped to 19.8. I also noticed having a bicycle strapped to the front dropped my mileage a full 10%. These figures are based on 5 trips across America in my westys.

84 Camper, no mods, stock tires
I got 17-18 mpg on my last long trek. Florida to Cali in 4 days! Averaged just over 70 mph on the highway. I'd imagine it'd be even better when I'm not in such a hurry :) |
