Ok forgive me, I have a Devon camper conversion, so the range/etc. isn't stock. What is the deal with the metal cover over the stove? Does it turn the 2 burners into a flattop grill, or is it just supposed to keep the heat off the (probably particle board) cover?

It's s dish drying rack, has a drain at one end over the sink. Too thin to cook on.

It also makes a convenient place to put things. We will cook or heat up something and after shutting off the gas close the lid and put the pots there to serve. Gives extra room.
By no means use it for cooking, it will warp.

Ah, thank you. I now vaguely remember hearing that several years ago. I'm not convinced dish drying is important enough for the hassle/weight/cost/engineering/etc. but sure, why not.

Well, again, it makes a convenient place to put things while the lid is up. Like when you're brushing your teeth and so forth and it does work as a dish drain.

For some unknown reason, the Canadian Westy didn't get a fold down, it's affixed with screws into the lid :(

I'll upgrade to fold down one when the right one pops up for sale at a reasonable price ....

To give you some idea how useful it is... when we bought our Westy it still had the blue plastic protective film on it. I don't think it had ever been unsnapped & lowered.

As I recall, others have had the same experience.

I've read a few posts with people mentioning that same experience ! :)

Maybe it is just one of those things some people kinda want because it seems cool if you don't have it but in reality not used very often .....

This points out perhaps the primary purpose: protecting the laminate underside of the cabinet lid from heat while cooking. The additional uses are convenient bonuses.

Hi, I was wondering whether it’s ok to leave the stove rack in place all the time. My parents, from whom I bought the camper, never used the stove and stored the rack in a cupboard. Is it something that was supposed to be added to the stove only when cooking? Thanks!

In over 20 years I've never put the stove rack anywhere but on the stove. I typically put a dish towel above the stainless drying rack and another in between the rack and the stove grid to quiet rattles.

My guess is that your folks moved it to keep it from rattling which it can do if not snugged up in some way as with dish towel, etc.

I presume by "rack" you mean the stove grate (or grill)? This gizmo:

If so, mine is on 24/7/365... except to clean. The vans were shipped from the factory with them installed and essentially lock into place, so, yes, feel free to return it to its rightful spot in the kitchen and camp onward. :wink:

I also keep my stove's rack or grill on 24 seven and also put a towel between the rack and the SS stove cover.
