Can someone tell me what this is for?

I R&R my engine, and was not sure if this switch got changed...
Should it be on Hi or Low?

Thanks!

Matt

OK, where do the wires go? A picture of the other end of that brown wire m might help.

best guess is altitude switch. Look at the label on the engine lid to see if it mentions elevation. Look at the wires I bet they are both white and lead back to the ECU. Also the M-Code may show a city like Denver etc as the destination.

The bus was bought in Colorado, and came from there.

I will try to get some pictures now of the other ends of the switch wire...

There are two white wires that come out of the FI loom near the air filter. Most likely those are the ones and VW installed the mysterious altitude switch that makes the engine run leaner. Leave it on low if you are in PA. High would be like for Denver or higher in Colorado.

Read this - maybe it is even your bus https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=411925&highlight=altitude+switch

Altitude switch. I think that is the first pic I’ve seen of possible VW implementation. I wonder how you set it for emission testing, officially?
