as you can see I do have a nasty problem that I keep stopping to drill holes in everything  slows me up a lot

Ian, nice to see that your car will be build to be a serios race car 8)

Lot's of ideas you do not see on show cars and seem to make a lot of sense on yours! Keep going!

Hey Ian,

Where'd you get all that sexy dished (lightened I imagine) fasteners you're using?

Second, your roll bar hoop ties in and appears to bolt to the side sills in the back seat area. Is there anything under there that ties the mounting plates to the pan?

Ian, I had a look at your built again today. Are the front shocks all the way out on above picture? Looks like the lower control arms are not even parallel to the ground and not even considering any loading and/or droop yet? :?

Maybe it is the perspective of the photo, but the shocks look short compared to: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1244668.jpg

Kevin suggests the lower arms to be parallel to the ground when the car is filled and sitting on the ground. Or did you order extra short shocks for an extra low ride maybe? 8)

Cheers
Lars

It is always a pleasure to see a craftsman apply his trade on a serious project. Very well done Sir. Your skills are admirable.

DORIGTT Mon Aug 09, 2021 8:58 am

Ian, you mentioned testing your car's torsional stiffness.
How do you accomplish that?

Ian Godfrey Mon Aug 09, 2021 2:04 pm

Dorigtt, most of the fasteners are from Ti64 and some from Race Bolts in Australia. they are lovely titanium with rolled threads and not far off metric grade 8.8 in strength.
Well spotted on the roll bar, there is a plate welded to the side shelf and a pipe that is welded to the underside that goes to the floor. It's bolted to the floor so the body can be removed.

Ian Godfrey Mon Aug 09, 2021 3:50 pm

here's how the main roll bar hoop meet the side tray:

then the post underneath to the floor:

then the doubler under the pan:

I did the design and the peeps at Meridian Motorsport did the excellent construction. A lot of welding in very tricky places :)

Dorigtt, in the excellent thread on STF https://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=127619
FJ Camper has a diagram of where the Ghia pan twists (the yellow stripe), you can see it when you jack up one front wheel and the door doesn't close properly.

After I installed the cage it made no difference where I raised the car, the doors shut normally.
There are machines for testing torsional stiffness where the rear suspension points are fixed to a frame and a beam is fixed to the front suspension points, a force is applied to the beam and the deflection of the body measured. I would love to get this done out of curiosity. There is a good diagram on page 8 of this article
https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1073&context=mems411
thank you for your interest in my project, as it is a bit different to most of the threads on this forum.

Halbug, there definitely is an issue with my front shocks, I didn't order short shocks! And my front suspension has no droop
When I finish setting up the front end I'll email Mendeola and see if the shock issue and a couple of other things can be resolved.

So on to the hand brake mechanism. I've got a Wilwood caliper made for Rally Design that is intended for English Ford Escorts. I got it because is has a really clever handbrake design that is very light, but it did mean I had to make up my own cables. Rally design provide a basic inner and outer but it needs adapting.
first i finished off the rear hard lines

then I turned up some adapters copied of the VW ones

which slide onto the provided outer

which go in the pan in the normal way

at the caliper the outer has a teat

and a spring to keep them apart

I still need to finalise the length and crimp on the swage end

Ian Godfrey Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:40 am

finished up it looks like this.

Ian Godfrey Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:43 am

Finally after many months it's on the ground

I'm using 8" wheels with 225/50R16 tyres and clearance is very tight
here's the cut back bump stop

and the cut back camber adjusting bolt with a Jet nut

2 - 3mm at both spots :D

now onto the gear box fitting

Congratulation 8) 8) 8)

Looking great and must be a fantastic feeling to see a rolling chassis in your shop.

Cheers Lars

slayer61 Fri Aug 13, 2021 6:51 am

That's bloody brilliant. Very well done.

Congratz on the Ghia being a "roller" again as well.

Ian Godfrey Fri Aug 13, 2021 1:29 pm

Thankyou, yes very happy to see it on it's wheels, I just stood and looked at it for a long time :)

DORIGTT Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:03 pm

what size are your fronts?

Ian Godfrey Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:04 pm

the fronts are 195/50R16 on 6" rims with 52mm offset

overboost Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:27 pm

I can't wait to see what engine goes in that beast and the electronic controls associated with it. Looking at the rest of your build, I seriously doubt it will be carbureted.

Ian Godfrey Sat Aug 14, 2021 12:21 am

Overboost, it's a bit old school and a bit new. DTA programmable ignition with a throttle position sensor and a temperature send. JPM 230 heads, raptor cam etc on a dry sump 2387 type 1 with Weber 48 IDA's...... 'cos I love the sound, the look and I know how to tune them. Sorry, no fuel injection at this stage but never say never
