View original topic: Names and stories about your vanagon

I grew up in a DIY camper we called Superbanana. Our cousins had the same model named Jeremiah bullfrog. It seems a little cutesy to name your van but since I have little kids we have cart-blanch to name it whatever we want.

My two year old son suggested "Doodoo Bus With A House In It" (sort of rolls off the tongue) . My wife already named our Odyssey The Farty Bus which caught on right away. (my wife rocks). I like spinning stories so its important for me to conceive of this bus as some kind of being with a heart we co-create with our kids on the road but honestly I'd do it without them.

I would love to hear other peoples stories about their Van names, the characters and stories in your mind about them, and stories about the creating and using the name.

My wife and I wanted to name the van, but couldn't agree on gender. She's a fine woman to me, he's a solid man to her.

Therefore, Frankie.

We have 4 Vanagons, 1985 westy, Lucy, she was named after a dog in Boston, that had wonky ears.
1990 syncro, Burni, she got burnt.
1990 carat, Bella, she was previously known as the beluga, our now 4 year old couldn't say beluga, he got to bella, so that one is bella.
1984 tintop, he named Bobbi.

All of them female, I think it comes from the hassle and bustle around the queen, and the same around big ships, that and they say, if it has tits or tires, it's going to give you trouble ;)

We don't have any cool story to go along with our van name (Betsy), aka Ol Betsy, just seemed like a good fit at the time. Haven't affectionately called her that in a decade or so. Just writing it and remembering those days when my kids were little brings back good memories! I think i might resurrect the ol girl! Thanks for a fun post, its refreshing!

Our new van might have got a sex change last night. I was trying Puddles out for a while (a boy one) but last night I got excited about Laverne. (hence my new avatar) I think she will clean up classy enough for the name. Might change it a few more times before the family all agrees. but I'm kind of in love with Laverne now.
