View original topic: '64 wide 5 drums to fix short axle

Does anyone offer 64-65 wide 5 rear type 3 drums that are machined for short axles? I have done a short axle conversion on my '64 notchback to run wider wheels. I wanted to have my original drums machined but they are very worn & no good. I was hoping I could just order some new drums already machined to save some time. I was going to go with bug rear brakes, but early bug brakes are so narrow. This is not a race car but I just worry about those small bug brakes on the rear.

I don't know of any sellers offering wide 5 type 3 drums with a shortened snout. You could try ISP and see if they could be done though, before they got shipped.

I'd never run bug drums on a type 3. They're way too small, and even bug owners upgraded them to something else.

I suppose you could always go to a disc brake conversion for a short axle bug.

Thanks for the help. I guess I will get some new type 3 drums & have them machined down at a local shop. Quite a few years ago I think Kymco had the machined down drums I am thinking of.

I thought you just use a spacer, then you can use the stock drums as is, but it's been so long I don't remember

new rear drums suck too, they are bad to fit on the splines, you'll likely need to spend some time filing down each spline just a tad to get on and off the axle easily

unless you find genuine NOS drums...

Maybe find some good used drums and have them done. If I remember corectly, you remove around 5/8 I haven't had to do any in a while. If you get the disc conversion you would get the 67 bug set but then you will need a 5/8 spacers made.

I wish my drums were not so worn. They are the original 9/63 drums on my car. The fronts were replaced at some time & were almost new. I may check to see if I can locate some used ones if the new ones are such a bad fit.
