Optima 6 Volt batteries discontinued. :(

rcroane Thu Sep 20, 2018 3:19 pm

Bummer, but glad I just got my first one a couple months ago.

And I assume these have a limited shelf life so buying a replacement now for use years down the road wouldn’t make sense?

Might be time to see if I can get an interstate dry from the factory to add acid to later....

I have been wondering if you can use a 6v Golf Cart battery

Man IDK. The 6v batteries in my work golf cart are huge.
Does anyone make smaller 6v golf cart batteries?

It sucks that the Optima 6v has been discontinued. I have never had a 6v car. But if I did that battery would have been my first choice.

Good Luck you 6v guy's.

I never when with optima mostly because of the fit and of course the cost. My notchback is still 6v and my battery fits the original lid & clamp set-up under the seat.

We won't be seeing the end of all 6v automotive batteries soon so don't fret. Tractor supply stores still sell them as well as my FLAPS.

Yes, plenty of 6v choices out there, but are there any other AGM choices available (I think that is the right term for an Optima)?

On another forum, someone mentioned lifeline batteries

http://lifelinebatteries.com/

The contact I was given emailed me back quick. He's into VW's, I've suggested he might post post here about what they have up their sleeves :D

I always use 6v tractor batteries from my local farm supply store - is larger and fits differently, than the stock size - but at only $44 is the way to go..
for my 1955 and older beetles, I place a piece of plywood between the top of the battery and the seat springs, to avoid shorting our - works perfect.

Had a 6v Optima and worked great, but is expensive.

I want nothing to do with old type batteries and the rust associated. I'd much rather run AGM but I'm not a cheap ass...

Arggh! I've been using Optima 6V batteries for the last 12 years for my '62. I have three. One no longer holds a charge. I charge the other two once a year over the winter and so far they last the whole summer on one charge. This stinks.

- Oh, that's the difference, between us, I am a definite cheap-ass. - and rust can be repaired... different strokes, I guess.

I use a 6v 19L tractor battery that you can get at Carquest, Advance Auto, or tractor supply. The one I get is the exact size as the original battery for our VW’s, so it fits perfectly and I can put the metal battery lid back on to strap it down as intended. It is the exact same battery they sell through Worldpac for our cars at 3 times the price, they just slap a different sticker on it and call it a tractor battery and sell it for dirt cheap.

19L
same here- just noticed mine has a date of 2012 on it so it has done a great job for me. I remove mine every fall and move to warm storage so that may have helped it survive here where temps can get well below zero in the winter.
