I'm rocking og interior in this bus until I do the rust repair and replace the headliner :) The cab panels are og from other buses, not og to this bus.

Although I had thought I'd make some new front door panels with pockets for it - odd to have pockets in the later color, but correct for April 1961! :) I actually did make one, then I realised I did not have the fabric lined up correctly. The dark grey line was not the right distance below the chrome trim, maybe 1/4 inch off. Nerding out, I couldn't use it. :(

I had removed the drivers kick to check the underdash wiring.

But, wait, how had I missed this?

The choke had fallen out of the carb!
Also, the idle jet was mostly unscrewed. There had been things shorting out.

I don't think it was the ignition switch at all.
Put it back together without loose grounding hot wires

I do like this bus. :D

Loose fuse box was making my 66 EZ camper behave exactly as your *ignition switch *. Took me a while to solve that one.

The light switch works well, once helped a guy with a DC I was following to a show, It just died, so we checked for spark, none, checked coil for power, none, pulled license plate wire off and plugged it into coil, turned lights on and fired right up.

John Muir Idiot book thread here!
Wow. Not exactly the best location for arcing! How did this happen? Are the choke cover screw threads okay?
Likely just not fully tightened buy the last guy that worked on it. (Or the last gal.)
That license plate wire idea is sublime, but not so good for 57 or earlier, where there is a brake light wire in the bundle.
Standard traveling kit for me includes a jumper wire with two alligator clips. Same kit I use to fix furnaces, actually.

My '60DC had similar symptoms. Would start up and run in idle for about 3-4 minutes before dying. No sputter. Just shut down completely. Easy diagnosis...after I did a voltage test on the loose wire meant to clip to the automatic choke (6.7volts). I taped up the loose end (there's a 28PCI carb on this engine, ie. no automatic choke), the engine hasn't died since. That choke wire had been resting against the wall of the carb and shorting out as the engine warmed up.

Your Bus has smiled upon you Clara. The choke falling out and yet retaining the plate screws is indeed samurai.
