Ok so I'm timing my 009 with pertronix (yes I know, trash, I'm saving for a SVDA). Now while checking the pulley (aluminum with degree wheel) when I advance the dizzy I see the TDC marker on the case split at 3k rpm. . . That doesn't seem right to me if I'm advancing it, shouldn't the TDC marker be on the left (drivers side) of the split in the case? Especially if I'm timing for 30° advance at 3k RPM?
Any help would be greatly appreciated |

First i havnt ever had the 09 problem some speak of i think there a awesome distributor and i been offroading since 1976 but i always used the oem vw 09.now on to your question,if the pulley mark is at tdc at 3k it needs advanced farther to 28 to 32 degrees so the pulley should be at 30 degrees atdc in the case or at the case split.hope this helps |

Sorry not atdc but at tdc.so at 25-3k rpm the pulley marks should be where you want them in your case you say you want 30 total advance so rev the engine til the advance stops this happens around 2500-3k then if the distributor is setting at the proper location the pulley degree marks should read on 30 degrees at split in the case.if it doesnt,advance or retard the distributor til pulley wheel does read 30 at the split in the case at 2500-3k rpm.this is the best i can explain. |

Yes I understand what I have to do. My question is, when I rev to 3k the TDC mark is to the right of the split or on the split. Not to the left as it should be. Unless I have that backward.so what would cause that. |

The way im understanding is at 3k the pulley is at 0 at the split in the case if so advance the distributor until the 30degree mark is at the split in the case,if you cant advance because the distributor stops from hitting then theres another issue.hope this helps if not let me know we will figure out what is happening |

So the pulley is reading atdc vs btdc like it's supposed to? I run a 009 with pertronix and it's dead on but I was looking at another guys bug and was checking the timing and it was off like yours is. I ended up getting it close by feel but that's not optimal. Are you sure your clamped onto the #1 plug wire? Another thing is to pull the pass valve cover and rotate the motor to tdc on #1 and see where the pulley is vs the distributor rotor. It should be right on the #1 terminal at tdc with the pulley at tdc in the split. Is this a new pulley? Do you have another one to compare it to? Most of these parts come from China these days and I wouldn't be suprised if the key was cut wrong. |

Yes if its china made check and recheck.if the pulley is staying at 0 when rev to 3k and turning the distributor dont do much it may be the weights sticking or sring is off in bottom of distributor |

Thank you all for the replies. . . . And I found the problem (you are gonna laugh and I'm ready for the flaming).
Sigh. . . . . The timing light has and advance wheel on it and I had bumped the wheel at some point. When I got home today I looked at it and sure as shit the needle was buried in advance.
Total rookie blunder.
So, it's timed and running. . . Now to figure out the rest of the problems |

MY old school light does not have that technology to get me in trouble.... Technology is not always your friend!... Does owning a "Smart Phone" make you smarter or just get you in trouble faster?

The most accurate timing light is the old neon type that you can't see unless it's dark.
They used to be around for about $4.00, now they are scarce. We use them with MSD ignition systems as they screw up most modern timing lights.
