Hi,

I have an OG paint 55 Beetle that came from Sweden. There is rust underneath the paint.

Id like to remove some of the staining if possible. Id considered using a rotory polisher to go over it but I dont want it to look too shiny.

How would you best approach this?

Close up:

I have heard of people using Anchor wax which I believe leaves a greasy surface which I wouldnt want, and Collinite 476 but have no idea as have never used either.... This is my first 'patina' car - my others have all been sanded and polished to death.

Cheers

Wet sand it with 2000 grit & then wax it.

We have a product in the USA called CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust Remover) that can work very well to remove stains like that.

There are some good before and afters in this Gallery search

Maybe you have a similar product in your area?

I've had good luck using a paint cleaner to remove the same sort of thing.
It will clean it but won't make it super shiny unless you buff and wax it afterward.

Thanks for the replies :)

I dont fancy colour sanding and mopping it to be honest... the paint has loads of raised rusty bits - i tried a clay bar on it and it took the paint off the highs and left black marks... you can see the raised bits here:

I tried the CLR on a small patch with a grey scotch pad. This is the only product I could find - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0731HLFD4/ref...&psc=1

I tried it on a small area of my rear valance, and it just took the OG paint off right back to primer, so Im a bit cautious about using it, but the results do look great on here.

Iv got a bit of paint to get off the front quarter too, not sure the best way to approach this either:

Has anyone used a MrClean Magic Eraser with CLR? I have light material to remove and my thinking is that it won't remove too much original paint.

Cool to see my bus frames on the top of Everest list above although I used the green 3M pads on them.

I'll use TR-3 after cleaning.

It's for my Nissan 720.
