It’s not impossible but would create quite a few more challenges. If I do it again I’ll probably look for a late split and consider raising the rear wheel arches and just get as much benefit as possible from wheel offset/live with the tires protruding from the body.

Good!! I already listed them, also considering raising the frame to align with the og bedfloor. I took some measurements and think about narrrowing the frame 122mm which is about 6inches.
You didn't keep the split's rear wheel arches? i dont remember...

Narrowing it that much more will also push the transmission mounts into places they shouldn’t be, causing you to need to modify those, subframe for the front diff will also need quite a bit of modification to accommodate the extra material removed. Depending on how you do the steering it will also cause some extra headache. The Syncro frame with that much removed will also sit inside of the split frame with that much cut out.

I did remove the split wheel arches inside to keep the Syncro wheel arches because all of that is important to the rear suspension. I meant that if I did it again I would just cut the wheel well exterior panel and move it up a few inches all cosmetic. You could probably mount the Syncro frame to the split original top hats. I did it the way I did for all sorts of reasons but there is definitely more than one way to skin a cat as they say. Good luck on your build. 👍🏼

Well last year I had to tow the bus to Vws@thesprings, and that did sting a little.
Happy to report that this bus made it under its own power and although I still don’t consider it finished( working on building the camper kit until the day we left and it’s probably only 80% complete.) Complete enough for the family to spend a few days in though 😃

I haven’t taken a lot of photos from the camper build but here’s a few.

That thing is totally awesome. Too bad someone doesnt make, market and sell those. I think they would be very popular, especially in a camper setup

Are you talking about the door cabinet? I could certainly pop a few more out I’m already building one for a friend. Or the Syncro conversion?

Fair enough! I just finished my wife’s vanagon westy to Syncro, my bay window is next in the lineup but there’s always room for more. I’d hate to get bored. 😂

Decided to take the bus on a campout with my son, and why not make an event out of it?

We called it Oktobusfest, beer was consumed. Bratwurst for dinner and breakfast, fish caught and the bus was great.

It even won an award for best bus at camp.

It was the only bus at camp

I love this bus. I think it’s my favourite bus on here.
The work gone into it is massive. Race taxi.ch vanagon type grafting is no mean feat. I know a little bit of your pain. We put a vanagon rear suspension onto a split back in ‘07. I hadn’t the knowledge or the resources at hand to do the IRS graft using conventional methods. But i did have an abundance of time and an old vanagon wreck as a donor. Now you pushed the envelope a lot further with a syncro full install. Kudos brother. And as the man vin diesel said, its all about family. Keep your updates coming. No matter how small. We are watching.

Over the weekend I attended a camp put on by Utah vw camping and overlanding. Their first annual Christmas tree camp.

It was a good time.

A small gathering and nice to get out at a time when most stay home, had the place to ourselves and didn’t see another vehicle the entire time.

Drive out was perfect, except for a nagging feeling from my engine that seemed slower and somewhat more tired than the last trip.

On the drive home I found out why things felt a bit off. My engine decided it had enough of this. I can’t really complain Otter the overland bus was able to pull me off of the shoulder and come back to grab me later. For an unknown and basically free engine I got a season of camping/driving. Was able to test the bus and it’s Syncro system. Now I have to decide on what to put in there for good. Really leaning towards an in-line 4 VW engine but we’ll see.

Also let me design the camp flyer

Went with a 1.8 8v gti gasser. The next owner can put a tdi in it 😂
I’ll throw a walk around video together that could be fun after a couple of beers.
