Anyone have experience using this or installing in a Thing?

I have slow to light brake lights and was going to swap out OE hydraulic switches for new, quality, ones but this switch just might be a better fix...

Thanks, I tried searching the forum before I posted the topic, not sure why I didn’t see this topic before. Thanks again

I installed the kit last year and it worked through the summer. I was happy with it since as others stated, I could stop the car without activating the brake lights and was told several times my brake lights weren't working just to find they were. The addition of the kit allows the lights to come on before you are even applying the brakes, depending on how it is adjusted.
Grabbed some pix:
I kept the wires together from the switch, split the red off and connected to the terminal block near the brake fluid reservoir. You can see the terminal block and red wire - crimped in the other 2 wires that were originally in there. Then ran the black along the harness up to the fuse panel.

Whoa!! I need to come back to the ol’ Samba more often.... I’ve been wanting a kit like this for a couple years, and even bought a couple micro switches to try and build my own..... time, effort, and focus are lacking these days, I’m all in for one of these! Or two I guess... I’ve got a new to me bug now!!

KenJ06: Thanks for the pictures! I had not installed one onto a Type 181 yet. Thanks for this contribution and sharing your positive experience with my pedal-activated brake light kit.

Just for fun, here's an old drawing of wiring for the aux. brake light switch.

In a Thing, this is very simple; one wire to the brake light fuse, and the other wire to the connector right at the fluid reservoir next to the pedals. The "two-into-one" connector is just like the one Beetles use for the back up lights; you can buy them new, but there's probably one in your junk drawer.

As usual, thanks to Captain Spalding for letting me steal vector objects from his artwork.

Mondshine: Great minds think alike! Mine kit is wired the exact same way. The benefit of my kit is that it is a bolt-in to the existing pedal assembly and "hides" behind the accelerator. I did not want it to be visible.

I now have a web store where you can purchase this brake pedal activated switch directly: www.aircooledevolution.com/products

Hey, interested in this kit. Can this switch be installed without removing pedal assembly in a 1963 beetle??

mondshine Wed Oct 23, 2024 11:11 am

Yes.

Only the rear-most bolt must be removed. That's the bolt which holds the switch mounting bracket in place.

My brake lights quit working and it is the sending units. I am cleaning the reservoir, installing all new fluid and changing the sending units. I have discs on the front and ordered a Harley switch to see if the threads are the same. Ghia has discs and uses the same sensors.
