Can anybody tell me what is going on here. 83 with and aircooled 2.0 swap .this picture is of the inlet/outlet of the oil cooler it almost looks like the end of a bolt but the hole is jagged and not concentric. Any ideas?

sure there is not part of a seal still in the hole?

Nope the seals are rubber. Whatever is in there is metal

I don't know air cooleds but I"m having a hard time with your description. "looks like a bolt end (which would be solid) but some hole is jagged (you've switched from the bolt to a hole?) and not concentric (I know what concentric is but is this pertaining to the "bolt end" and the "hole that's jagged"?

Any more details? Is the part blocking the hole steel (use a magnet) or aluminum?

The hole around obstruction is jagged. The object is metal and kind of looks like the end of a bolt.

Could that be a normal part of machining the housing, then plugging that straight ahead hole, as it looks like the oil can go to the right (about the 10 O'clock position) as it appears to be machined passage that way. Can't see enough but if there is indeed another place for the oil to go then that may be normal. If not, obviously something's amiss.

Looks like a bore from thataway.
Can you poke a wire in the direction of the arrow?

The blocked passage could be for the oil pressure switch. Not sure why it might be blocked, don't have a disassembled engine available to check out.

It appears the oil comes into the top of the cooler somehow teeing off to the OP switch and exits the bottom of the cooler into the main oil galley.

I tried to stick some saftywire in the gap to no avail. I also pushed it with a chisel and its solid.

I've often seen the insides of those, looking like that, clean it down, fit new seals and move on.
