I pulled the rear bench out of my bus and took it apart to clean/refurbish/reupholster. I notice on each folding bed bracket, there is a short, jagged piece of metal that could easily damage the new fabric that I install. It just seems to dangle loosely, and I'm tempted to remove it. What is the purpose of this piece? I'm not sure if it's something that was damaged by a PO, or if it has a functional purpose? As far as I can tell, the bed has always worked fine.

Those are broken and a common problem. You can remove them if you want by drilling out the big rivet.
Those help when folding the bed away. They help to lift the seat back up. But you can still just grab the seat back and pull it up by hand.

Awesome, thanks! I will remove them.

They also lock the seat back in the upright position, could keep a back seat passenger out of a wheel chair in the event of a rear end collision.

Hm. I guess I'll cut the bits off these ones to make them usable temporarily and put replacement on my ToDo list.
