I have read diagrams and posts about this but my 74 sb has a porsche 924 steering wheel.
new horn and new wiring from the brake light wires to the horn.
Can somebody tell me about how the ground works on the steering column. i get the part about it grounding with the column. i have tried grounding the wire from the steering wheel to the column...no go!
the ground wire coming from the horn itself goes under the dash somewhere, possibly to the two column switches via the harness plugs at the base of the dash and column.
does it, ground wire continue to one of the switches (turn signal or wiper) and then some how gets to the horn button?
Could it be the base of the 924 steering wheel cannot make contact with something to carry the ground circuit to the horn button?
looking for some help on this....go easy on me, i rode the short bus...lol thanks in advance!!!
 |

Most likely. Here are several resources for you to review as you go through the horn circuit:

Here's a link to info & pictures on how the stock horn setup is configured and works in late models Beetles -- may give you some insight in dealing with your modded system:

I fought the horn in my 72 super for years. I could never get a good clean ground through the steering column. I could get enough flow to light up a test light so I knew it was wired correctly, but not enough to honk the horn. I added a relay to the circuit, with a negative trigger, and now the 53 year old horn sounds great.
It takes only a small amount of flow to tickle the relay, sending out a resounding blast.
Google "relay with a negative trigger" for a simple wiring diagram. |
