Hello Samba members! Just have a curious situation/question with my '79 super. The brakes work fine but had a kinda lot of travel, so I adjusted the brake shoes using the 2 stars per wheel and all went ok (moved them out, closer to the drum & then backed of a little) great- but now I have a lot more travel with the hand brake! it still works good but I thought I did something wrong, but as I thought about it, it makes sense that now the brake shoes are farther away from the handbrake mech. it has more travel. Just wondering if this is normal/correct and if other owners have experienced the same thing. thanks in advance for all the info & knowledge. paul |

That Jbug video didn’t show how to adjust the hand brake. The guy just tightened the nuts down all the way. Not a good idea.

Yes.
I was taught to adjust the brakes on Bugs by going all the way tight then back off three clicks. Recenter the shoes and do it again. There should be a light drag felt and heard when the wheel is turned by hand. After that I would adjust the handbrake to 3-5 clicks. |

I say you slacked off the adjustment too much; the handle distance should decrease with properly adjusted rear brake shoes. Do that correctly, and first; and if need be, then adjust the handbrake cables a little.
Three clicks should hold the VW stationary pretty decent. |
