Looks like a regular bug eye kit with stock early headlights. They just tilted the nose piece.

Kinda cool though!

hmmm...

roy kohrogi Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:47 am

actually compare to the regular bug eye kit this unusual kit are
complete different on the contour and thickness of the fiberglass.

I grafted the bug metal buckets on to the regular bug eye kit but
did not come out to be same.

can anybody help identify.....?

General Flea Wed Jun 29, 2005 7:13 pm

Isn't that what the early, early baja kits looked like with the more contured "eyesockets"I have seen one like that before, I will have to do some research...

bajaherbie Wed Jun 29, 2005 8:03 pm

those headlights look like they should be on the side of jaucque cousteau's (sp?) submarine....

roy kohrogi Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:38 am

I really like the look of the bug eye kit.

still big mystery for last 7years. talked with several old time off roader
but, they recalled the kit in late 60's it wasn't very popular due to the
glass lens tend to break while off roading.

I do have a extra nose pieces but, nobody can identify the manufacture.

any information is much appriciated.also if you have same kit PM with an offer.

Mmmmm like to solve this matter. :?: :!:

I have an old baja kit on my sons 58 that is alot like that one but the buckets are out of it at the moment. Would you be so kind as to take a picture of the way they are mounted (back side) in the fiberglass and post it? I'm sure I can figure it out but a pic could save me alittle trial and error.

Okay my question is who manufacture this bug eye kit...? please help identify it. here in Torrance CA I know least 2 other Baja bug with a same kit. one is 1956 oval like mine and other one is 1960 bug.

you have to either cut out the headlight buckets from early bus or bug.

graft the headlight bucket on to the nose piece and fiberglass it.

order to accept the earlier headlight ring, you need the buckets.

this Baja is located in my weekend home in lower desert now.
if you give me enough time I can take detailed photo for you.

if you can please post your son's bug eye kit.

Thanks

Roy

Looks like the same front end. The hood is inside the car and looks identical to the one on yours. Sorry no pics of that yet.

Hi Tim Gud

Yes the above photo is an identical baja kit.
Some kit came without the metal headlight buckets.
wish I know more about this unusual & unique Baja kit.
So far most of the kit I saw was on the early Bug like pre 1960.
Some guy told me as the kit was early “Haven Miller kit” but,
Looking through old hot vw and 1968 edition “how to Built Baja Bug”
Shows the regular bug eye kit as very first fiberglass Baja kit.

Did empi make a baja kit in the early days? This one had empi flared fenders inthe rear, wod empi knobs on the dash, and the black stripe kit. Even the front fenders look somewhat like empi flared fenders (but not exactly).
Does yours have the metal headlight buckets installed into the fiberglass or just the early light assemblies bolted into the fiberglass?

roy kohrogi Fri Jul 01, 2005 12:26 pm

My nose piece has a metal buckets already installed on it.

I have a couple extra nose pieces but no metal buckets.
this came from 7years of hard work from searching various swap meet like Pomona.funny part is when you find it ,a price is anywhere from free~$5.00~$20.00max.

some nose is thicker fiberglass than others.
some came yellow color as an original & thinner fiberglass.
Yellow color remind me of the early JSC kit.

Yes Empi did produced fiberglass baja and buggy kits.
( i will research this one)

Meyer manx also produced a baja kit, with an indentations on the front hood.

Did you ever identify the maker of this baja kit Roy?
Anyone else know or have a good idea where these kits are from?

VWHoward Tue Jan 09, 2007 5:33 am

Johnny's Speed and Chrome in Buena Park sold them in the 60's. Look in there old catalogs. I installed one on a 1954 bug in 1968.

Thank you, this is a great news I received in last 8years.

I saw old 60's movie with this baja nose.

First Fiberglass Baja kit was produced by Haven Miller in 1968.
this first baja kits are the bug eye kit with later 67up headlights.
is this makes my kit older than known baja kits?
hope I can ID this kit. anybody with any informations are appriciated.

90% of this mock up aren't the real thing..

The nose on the real deal has a "body line" in the buckets that resolve at the bottom.. there's no license plate relief on the real thing.

BajaRoy Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:41 am

currently, researching on old JSC catalog.

Tim10, do you happen to have a pic's of the real thing?
are you refer to the below bugeye kit?

Real or not real, still a big mystery here.

El Vocho Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:26 pm

So..... Is it a Johnnys kit or not.

Ok so I know this thread has been dead forever but. I am restoring an old school Baja and it has this nose. It's destroyed and I can't patch the fiberglass so I need a replacement. I rennet about a year ago maybe longer someone has some they were making in the classifieds. Of course can't find it now. So if anyone knows who it was and if they could still make one let me know. Also anyone has one that they would be willing to part with hit me up it's def needed and after seeing it up close I love the old buckets in there. Thanks all as usual.
