Hello all!!

I tried to search for it but I got vague results so I figured I’d ask.

Has anyone here dropped in a VW Type 1 into the middle of the 914? I’d so, do you have pictures of the swap? And secondly, will the bus Vanagon 3 speed auto fit?

Thanks!

Its been done. You would be better off ...if you are going that route...to use a pancake style 3 engine.

And...is there any particular reason...why would you want a bus automatic? The gearing and final drive would be horrendous for this car...like 20 seconds 0-60.

If you were going to go automatic you would use one from a type 3 or type 4 car (003 automatic)....same basic automatic section but gears and final drive are in tune for a 2200 lb car....not a 4400 lb loaf of metal.

The problem will be that the 914 is a mid engined car. All of these transmissions in question are set up for a rear engined car so the final drive turns the wrong way. If it were a four speed...some transmissions can be run in this configuration...if they are built symmetrically....by flipping the differential over.

As far as I know the 003 cannot flip the final drive over because they use a cast iron internal final drive carrier But...they do use a full hypoid final drive which technically is symmetrical....so its possible the ring and pinion may be able to be flipped.

total waste of time, 914 used engines are a dime a dozen. Type 1 will not have enough power nor will the sheetmetal fit, TOTAL waste of time and energy don't do it. To put an automatic in a 914 you will have to get a 411 transmission and turn around the ring gear and pinion and then find a way to hang it in there, ALSO a total waste of time, buy a 411!!!!!!

How about a 2L/2.5L Subaru engine? Just need to add a water radiator either in front or above at the engine intake. Cable shifting automatic available too. Unless done really well the 914 will have no value.

Why not just buy a used Porsche Boxster. More powerful, more comfortable, a cheaper, and they come with automatic transmissions, if those are your priorities. 914s are becoming too expensive to hack up.

Really Nice Original Porsche 914/4 s are skyrocketing, they have a much better handling than the 911s I hate to say it,don't do it and with less than a 1000 914/6 in good running order they are on a different planet.so everyone are turning to the 914/4s. Try and make yours as original as possible. Squeezing a bit of extra power out of an original 914 with its original injection is not that complicated. The 914/4 2.0 have an extra long stoke crank giving just loads of torque for a 1970s cars vs the 1.8/1.7 type 4 short stroke crank and even shorter stroke type 1.
and original intake valves are massive compared to the punny type 1's.
