Last couple years I have had an issue with brake squeal. And my old friction pads were worn pretty unevenly. I got a Bentley book last year and I see in there looking at the caliper break down that there is supposed to be a piston retaining plate between the piston and friction pads. I do not believe these have ever been present on my ride. I do not see them in the caliper when I put my new tires on yesterday, and I am about to service the brakes before a road trip.
The brake noise started a few years ago after my mechanic did the brakes for me. I redid them myself with the same results about two years ago.
I mean shouldn't I have these plates in there? And if so, anyone know where I can acquire them? The bottom line is I should have got the service manual ten years ago... duh |

yes you need the plates. Make sure the notches are aligned correctly with the tabs when you install them. If the brake pads are wearing way unevenly the calipers need to be rebuilt. The old trick to stop a squeal is to chamfer the leading edge. Think of a surfboard. If the nose is a little high it slides smoothly over the water. If the nose digs in it pearls and gives the surfer a wipeout. If the edge of the pads is given a little chamfer then the rest of the pad slides freely as it brakes. If the leading edge of the pad tries to dig in it causes the pads to squeal.
Do not swap your existing calipers for a rebuilt set. You'll be better off rebuilding those. Be sure to put your location in your avatar or sig line so we know what city you are in. |

These reproduction plates aren't factory, but NOS retaining plates are hard to find and very expensive:

Someone on The Samba had several sets of very good repops made, and sold them in the classified. I bought a couple pair, and they fit great. But I can't find the listing anymore. Maybe he's sold out of them... |
