View original topic: Syncro Front Wheel Bearings

I have a new to me Syncro. Currently undergoing complete front end rebuild. Previous owner told me wheel bearings had recently been done. I beg to differ. I have it apart and the outer race of the bearing does not seat properly within the bore of the spindle. There is some play that appears to be only in the outer race to the bore and not the inner race to outer race or hub sleeve through the inner race. Has anyone dealt with this? Would a retaining compound take up the slop or have these had to be machined and then an insert put in?

Hello, I’d have to see a picture of what you are talking about. The Syncro front wheel bearings depend on the installed outer CV Joint to secure them. Without they could be quite loose. You can not even push the van with the outer cv joints removed without risking damage. The outer cv joint nut torque is also quite high. Don’t recall it off hand.

also note that Syncro front wheel bearings are one use only once they have been disassembled they need to be replaced with new bearings.

Once the drive hub is pressed out of the bearing it would be difficult to reuse it. Otherwise, if only the CV shaft is removed and the spindle r and r'd, you can reuse the front wheel bearing.

I did read your whole writeup about this. I was wondering if having the cv axle out of the bearing assembly would give me the play I am seeing....based on your stuff seems like that is all i am really seeing.

I think the tourque is 256 ft lbs....and yes my cv joint is out and i see why now that there could be play in the bearing mount. I think I am ok. Thanks
