I never realized how confusing/important the right combination of distributor and carb is. I’ve been told to change out my H30/31 Brosol for a 34 PICT to get it running better. I have a 009 distributor with electronic ignition. Don’t forget that somewhere along my bugs life it was changed to a single port set up. What are the opinions of best combo for it to idle and run well? |

If it’s a single port, don’t put a 34 pict carb on it, it would require an adapter. The Solex/Brosol H30/31 is a solid carb for a 1600 sp and it can run with most distributors if you hook it up right. The other choice for Carbs is the 30 pict series, I would go with a 3 or a 1 with power circuit, check out volkzbitz.com for the best quality carbs.
The 009 is not the best distributor, but if it runs well and gets decent mileage I wouldn’t stress to much. Otherwise a couple of good alternatives is the 205T single vacuum advance works well with the H30/31 and the 30 pict series. The 034/205ZB SVDA distributor works well with the H30/31 if you hook the vac can up to the lower rear vacuum on the carb but won’t work well with the 30 Pict series. Others have reported to have better performance with the 019 mechanical only advance distributor over the 009 as well. For distributors I recently got my 205T rebuilt by Bill:

here on the Samba and I was very pleased with the entire transaction and end result. |

Those distributors mentioned above are all great choices. I have rebuilt many of them and tested them on my Sun distributor tester. You can find them for sale in the classifieds. I do have some posted there. |

As mentioned above. Get your distributor from Bill. And step in line for a matching 30pict 3 from Tim at Volkzbitz. I’ve been on a waiting list for a couple of weeks as there is high demand for that carb right now. |

Agreed... Bill (distributor) and Tim (carb) are a winning plan. |

If you have a good working carburetor then stick with it. As they say, if it isn't broke then don't fix it. The H30/31 are still produced by Brosol in Brazil. They are the best new carburetors produced. |

The best carb is a 30 PICT 3 which is what I am currently running. As prebiously mentioned VolkzBitz is a great choice there.
The 205M or 205T would be the best distributor choices for your setup,. There are at least 4-5 reputable distributor rebuilders posting on here, I would shop around as I have found the pricing can vary substantially. |

The H30/31 was never a "stock" carb. And i'd take a rebuilt GERMAN Solex, by Tim, over a new Brazilian carb.
I had, for a short time, a stock 1600 with a H30/31PICT and tried it with a number of different distributors. None worked as good at a German Solex 34PICT-3 and 034 distributor. The 30PICT-x work great with the stock 205T and with 019. |

If you buy the cheapest.. buy EMPI. You can get a brand new Chinese distributor for $40 complete.
Just saying. |

I have a Solex 30 PICT 3 with a 205t and it’s as smooth as butter. |

And lest I be forgotten, I have been restoring the 113 905 K,M and T's since 2003. I have many cores with which to work from - you don't have to send me yours, and good feedback from Samba customers.
and now, back to the fray... |

So would I-- but I disagree that the Brosol H30/31 is not a good choice as well. I ran one of those with my 1600 SP autostick for years with no problems. |

That's because it is the factory matched pairing. |

The Brazilian's don't seem to mind them. The 34 PICT-3 and 034 combination wasn't stock except for a year or so. A stock discussion is about as useful as a NOS discussion. Everyone has their own idea. I say go with what works. |

Reread my post. Nowhere did I say anything about buying cheap Chinese. That's why I said REPUTABLE distributor rebuilders.
tasb and Heimlich are both excellent choices for a great genuine German Bosch rebuilt distributor at a fair price. |

Agreed- no problems at all with an H30/31. |

Just another tid bit for, if you go with the short aluminum distributors go with the 113905205T. They use the taller distributor caps which are more economical. The other two distributor with M and K variant have the short caps which are twice as much. |

If you are not convinced of the performance and reliability of Rebuilt German parts. Have a look at my buddy’s (asia3b) heavy ass 69 Westfalia camper. 1600sp with Tim’s 30-3 and Bills rebuilt 205T. He’s one of the highest mileage guys on the Samba. I think he has close to 90,000k miles or more with that combo. Somebody on reddit saw him on Pikes Peak
We doing this same set up on my friends 70 bus.

That's because they are buying what's readily available and low cost. Just like Americans were perfectly happy when their mechanic replaced their original distributor with a 009. They were readily available and reasonably priced.
If VW owners would stop settling for substandard, EMPI would go out of business. |
