:x :x :x :x :x :x     i am tring to sync my dual 32 pdist-2/3 carbs with my bently manual but they wont...let me explain. after i do the adjustment of the choke arm....before i even measure the intake volume... the arm wont rest on the screw.....its being held open by the adjustment i do with the choke arm. i can get it to come close...that is less than the adjustment but it wont close.please help. either advice or links to sites that say how to adjust these damn things. now.....i have another question....my right choke moves with lots of resistance. not just resistance of the spring but some internal resistance....it has to be adjusted slightly tight because its the only way it will close all the way when its cold....the left one feels like it should. how can i fix the problem |

First of all before even starting to adjust anything, you''l have to get those chokes working perfectly, so pull out the carbs and carefully disassemble the whole thing (lots of small parts). Clean all moving parts and oil everything up.. In short, get it like new.. While you're at it clean out the jets also.
Then adjust the chokes as described in your book while they are on the table.. Also adjust the throttle stop screws now.
Put the carbs back in and then adjust the linkage so it pulls evenly.
Turn the volume screws all the way in and then 3 turns out.
NOW start her up, and I bet you've got a whole other engine now..!
It should be running almost perfectly with little or no further adjustments, ofcourse assuming that the rest of the engine is in good shape.. Ignition, valve clearences etc...
Good luck. |

Read the pages that Bob posted, you normally don't adjust the linkage at all. |

You turn out the screw til it dosn't touch the lever, and then back in untill it just touches and then a 1/4 rev more.. Then you should be good to go.. |

The key just turns the power on to the chokes, it doesn't move anything. The chokes will start to heat up and slowly move until they are in the open position. If the chokes don't feel hot after a while when you touch them and the key is on, they aren't working.
Fast idle cams:
When the engine is cold and off, you push the gas pedal to the floor to set the chokes. They should close so check this. When they are closed, there should be a gap between the throttle stop and the carburetor. When the chokes open, this gap should close off. You don't adjust the short linkage arms to change this, there is another set of nuts on the carburetor to change the gap amount. The short linkage arms should be a fixed length. |

Yes, there should be gap, but only when the chokes are closed.
Try looking at the rebuild instructions in the shop book or I can try to post some info from my VW shop manual tonight |
