Please excuse the mess, I am in the process of a major clear out.

Make a long story short, a family friend and Trustee of a Trust which I am not a beneficiary of (same one that technically owns the house) saw the need for transportation in Tucson and paid for mounting and balancing the tires I bought just before got COVID and double pneumonia. I would have liked to paint them, however, don't have the time or money for the sandpaper, better to get something done than nothing.

Finally got time to myself, got the wheels mounted.

The family friend also paid for a windshield from JBugs (I chose because of free shipping and shortest distance) however, the emails are going to him, so need to call and find out what is happening. Still bums me wasn't able to get a used factory windshield, the rain be here again soon.

One thing led to another, had enough of not doing things right, so pulled the engine.

Had a bit of a surprise when pulled the fan shroud, ignore the missing starter bolt, any one see what is missing?

Engine is out, a couple of scary moments, including literally dropping the engine about a foot; thankfully seems no damage.

When the engine slipped, the tin gave me about a 2cm by about 3mm deep cut. I had to get the engine under cover (cloudy and cold today) and got a lot of grit and grease in it, thankfully had a nylon nail brush a former friend gave me when first started working on Volkswagens, scrubbed it out really well.

The oil cooler was not leaking.

For some reason the driver side heat riser has been welded and they went to a lot a trouble to make a snotty weld, bet the same one that welded on a plate to the underside of the battery tray.

The riser is almost carboned up, another reason glad pulled it.

Though the biggest reason for pulling the engine is to replace the seal.

I still do have all of that, I will have to find it. It’s somewhere :? I think what I have is for a 36hp engine but it fits a 40 just fine. I had no issues

What is the difference between the two? Just curious, all I care is it functions, she is never going to Pebble Beach. :P

I am patient, how long have I waited for a starter?

Got a few things done with Ruby today.

Cleaned the tar boards and attempted to clean the engine, transmission, and underside.

Starter bushing removed and replaced.

Removed both engine compartment seals, front wasn't hard, though the rear came out in crumbs, took me over an hour.

The channel has a plethora of dents and a number of rust throughs.

In the process of removing the seal, somehow removed skin off my finger and knuckle on the fender. Later scrubbed both well with a Nylon nail brush to be sure clean.

Did some cleaning and thinking on the inner fender rust holes. Time to get a cutting wheel for my Dremel, the 3,5" disk is too big. Somehow forgot to get after pictures...

Went ahead and got the deck lid seal removed, what dry bit left, since knew be a reminder of how difficult to remove, and was just like the engine seal. Good thing, was hiding a lot of surface rust and a rust hole.

This last hole be interesting to repair since no access on the backside for a copper spoon or welding a patch.

And being silly after several plus hours of careful cutting.

First, shout out to Chickensoup for giving me a used starter, which looks like it wasn't used much, stickers are almost new looking, and no rust or play in the shaft. :D I am contemplating pulling the transmission, front mount is also shot, so holding off installing it.

I been trying to get a small upholstery job done, however, need a break. Feels so good to get a smidgen done.

After supper, got the wiper switch partly mounted, forgot need to purchase the special tool.

Then wire wheeled the engine compartment sides, finding more rust. Thinking the only way to fix this is replace the bumper mount, it is the one with the broken weld nut. Any thoughts?

FWIW in AZ you will not need the thermostat. :)

The thermostat is for warm up, not cooling. Further, seems you are not from Arizona or been here in the Winter, we do get Winter weather including snow. I would rather have the engine warm up quicker as then can use the heat sooner. Right now inside the house is a brisk 62*F as been getting down to the high 40s at night.

By the way, your PM was upsetting, I would instead suggest a want to buy advert.

I don't recall your thread, so will read through it, we are in a similar position, just one generation difference.

Hey Adriel,

I saw quite a few things missing in that photo, Carb, Dizzy cap, exhaust, what else?

Because I took them off to make getting the engine out easier, except the exhaust was removed to look the the body rust.

Still have not found the venturi ring, linkages, or the associated bracket.

So some do not fit well?

As may recall, in the past, tried doing it by myself. Neighbor promised to help as told it takes two, got the windshield, then he backed out. So, waiting for the damn credit union Brother chose for the Special Needs Trust to clear the cashier's cheque (my inheritance), been over two weeks, so can call someone who many years ago stopped by asking if could help with the Squareback.

Maybe good to have a professional, they have the experience including if it is the correct size. I hadn't before as the two shops which would install windshields with trim wanted over $500, one wanted $800. If that is the case again, certainly not going to pay that.

Yes, certainly I will let you know if fits, you been a big help and the least I can do!

Thank you for looking out for the parts, appreciated.

If you're talking about the thermostat and throttle ring setup, most of those bits are available in the classifieds here on the Samba. Just make sure the parts are for a 40hp and not a 36hp before purchasing.

Thank you for the help, appreciated. :D Offered a 36HP and accepted, good to know will not work.

The reason there was a hiatus is due to my stupidity having my Brother, who has a special needs child, continue to be trustee of the first person Special Needs Trust, as he ended up abandoning all duties except approving and paying for expenses for eight months, causing significant over drafting. So have not been looking hard, will in earnest soon if live agrees.

I don't know even how it happened, I have a high pain tolerance so unless enough wetness to notice, don't know until later when washing.

The issue in this case be needing feel and dexterity a glove which could protect me could not offer, right?

By the way, I do wear gloves when using any power tools including a welder and after getting a piece of the wire rope embedded in my cheek (just itched) will be purchasing a full face shield.
