I'm getting close to spraying color for the first time. My question is if I have my panels final sanded and there is not metal, epoxy, or filler showing through, do I need to spray a sealer before the base coat? It has been my understanding that sealer is used to tie different surfaces together. But if I have a uniform surface is it necessary? Thanks for any advise. Just learning here.

Well, sometimes it boils down to preference. Some low price sealers lay down with some orange peel to them and that just adds texture to your base coat and so on. If I am doing a complete paint job I prefer to use a name brand sealer to make sure everything is uniform in color. So basically it is up to you. In your case it may not be necessary if your car is all the same color primer.

That's kinda what I'm worried about. Right now everything is uniform and smooth. Spraying sealer over it is another chance to get orange peel or imperfections that would need to be addressed. Like I said it's my first time and I'm a bit gun shy.(pun intended)! So I guess my real question is, will the base coat adhere without sealer. I have no mentor, just the internet and have found conflicting info about this.

If the surface is properly abraded (600 grit for solids, 800 grit for metallic) the paint should stick.

I personally have done it both ways and prefer the sealer route

Share some info with us. What brand of paint are you using? Are you doing a base/clear or a single stage? Solid color or Metallic?
