Hello. I have a 67 ghia with 4 lug 2liter alloys. The more I stare at it, the more I realize I want 5x130 Fuchs. I have the room and could probably get adapters for the front, but questing I would need new rear drums or have mine drilled. Are there off the shelf conversion drums for the rear? Are there new conversion rotors for the front? I’ve looked around and get more confused the more I look. If you have links to the actual parts I would appreciate it. |

Thank you. Does anyone offer the tears that you don’t have to have them machined?
If I wanted to upgrade the rear to disc these would work correct? https://socalautoparts.com/product/disc-brake-kit-...-threaded/
Not trying to be obtuse but the whole long axle/short axle, long snout/short snout thing eludes me. I have no idea if my axles have been swapped out. How do I tell what I have? |

Lots of axle info in the Search feature.

Agreed. Unfortunately also a lot of clutter that requires skimming through pages and pages of people asking what wheels will fit interspersed with useful info. Think I finally found the concise info I needed doing a google search. |

There are only 3 axles used on the Swing transaxle:
66 and earlier - short axle short spline
67 - long axle short spline
68 and type 3 - long axle long spline

Yep. Ive read through a lot of it before, but didn't have relevance to me at the time, now it does so trying to wade through the over information overload. I finally came across the second picture in another samba thread with the tape measure and confirmed what it was showing through of all people Airkewlds site that the measurement from the backing plate to the spring plate was about 3 1/2" on a short axle car, which appears to be what I have as far as I can tell. The nose on the drum brakes seems to have a spacer though which is kind of weird isn't it? I thought only the long axles needed spacers for the drums? |

I converted my 68 from long to short axle. Researched and watched YouTube videos. Never done anything of it's caliber before. Mine turned out great. My struggle was finding the parts needed to convert. Mainly the bearing caps and end castings. Then having the end castings pressed on to the tubes properly. Read through the last couple pages of this thread... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

I bought my rear drums from I guy in the classifieds. He machined the snout properly before sending them to me. |

From what I can tell I already have the short axles. I may have to post up some pics just to 2x confirm. |

Easiest way to tell is the end castings. Look at the first picture in the link I posted above to compare. |

Yep, short axle. So, all you need are rotors and drums. I wouldn't do adapters in the front. Would lead to less clearance and rubbing issues. |

Do these work for a 71 Ghia as well? |

I'm going to convert my 71 to the 5x130 set, and wanted to know what I'll need to get in order to do this. I've got front disc & rear drum brakes. I know the project is a big one, but I wanted to cross my T's & dot I's now while I do my research. From this post, I see that I'll need the parts listed below, but I know there'll be more to it. Any advise or shopping list from prior builds will be helpful and appreciated. I'm not much of a car guy, and w/ this ride I hope to become one someday from working on this car w/ my cousin. He's a mechanic but doesn't have much experience w/ vintage VW's.

Buck,
I just did this to my 70 Ghia.
Not a hard thing to do.
May as well order new wheel bearings while you’re at it.
Don’t get fancy and get the drilled rotors. I did and they make a lot of noise. I gave them away and got the solid rotors.
If you’re gonna lower it, pay attention to the offset of the wheel you buy. Do some measurements as all these Ghias are a little different.
I ended up needing a 5” offset. |

I swapped my '71 KG over to 5x130 front disc / rear drums. Front solid rotors ($86.00 ea) and rear drums ($60.00 ea) from Car Craft. Installed new seals & bearings (German) in front rotors... Easy.

Still haven't decided if I want to lower it yet, but I do want to change the suspension. |
