I've got a Manx-clone dune buggy on a '66 chassis. Last summer I had the LR brake strip out. The axle nut was finger tight. I thought it just hadn't been torqued. Replaced the drum with a German-sourced one. In less than 500 miles this also stripped out. I had carefully torqued it to ~300ft-lbs.
Anyone have an idea what is causing this? Thanks. |

I have an idea, I saw this once. After you know it is torqued, and the cotter pin is in place, drive 50-100 miles. Then pull the cotter pin and check the torque on the axle nut again. If it’s loose the spacer behind the axle bearing may be installed backwards. It has a larger radius on one side, and that faces inward. If installed backward the axle nut will keep loosening. |
