For what it's worth, I have gotten bad coils from both vendors and several others. I imagine many companies buy and resell stuff from the same factories and wholesale suppliers, and much of the lower end stuff has quality control issues. Leaking and exploding coils, dead or intermittent spark.. they fail in every way imaginable.
I was just reading this and thought, well if all that didn't fix the issue it has to be something else..
And thats exactly what someone else suggested and you discovered. Nice to have so many minds helping to problem solve with you. |

Reminds me of the time I put an NOS Steering lock in my 1967 Westfalia. Ran well for a bit after this was put in but then randomly the engine would cut out. Let it sit for a bit and then it would start again. Didn't know what the problem was.
Finally reviewed the last thing I did which was the steering lock and found that one low cost connector was the problem. Replaced with a new "brass" connector and problem solved.
Use this as my new approach to problem issues. Only took a couple of decades (or more) to figure this out. |

Boy, has it ever been solved. Took the car for a drive today and it is exactly just right.
I bought this coil from CIP
https://www.cip1.ca/vwc-111-905-105-h/
And this coil from Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Standard-Motor-Products-UC1...amp;sr=8-3
Now I just have to resolve this issue
Another shit part from CIP. Intermittently comes on at idle.

CIP, you would expect good quality from Beru, but today's Beru isn't what it used to be.
The occasional flickering of the oil pressure light when the engine is warm and at low speed is normal, but it should go away when accelerating.
The original VW oil pressure switch (through 1960) closes at a pressure of 0.3-0.6 kg/cm². The green light then comes on.
The original oil pressure switch has an adjustment screw.
The adjustment is for grounding to occur causing the warning light to go on.
If the light stays on too long, it can be fixed by turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise.
BUT... before changing this setting, you should check the oil pressure, preferably with a mechanical oil pressure gauge.
Something like this, for example.
I don't know if the CIP oil pressure switch has this adjustment screw. You could check it.

The CIP switch does not have an adjustment screw.
I tried two of them, both would come on at 10psi, the last one leaked.

I have never seen any genuine oil switch with an adjustment screw. The screw holds the wire. I have NOS ones on two engines at the moment.
@sunroof, it looks like cip1 has several different quality switches. This is one I have used successfully: https://www2.cip1.com/VWC-111-919-081 |

VW used various suppliers for oil pressure switches, such as Bosch, Messmer Radolfzell, ...
Have you checked under the screw?
When you remove the screw, there is another screw at the bottom in the cavity.
This is from a Dutch repair manual VW 54-59, with the cooperation of the VW factory.
I translated it into English in my previous post.
Oliedrukschakelaar = oil pressure switch
Afstelling = adjustment

So I pulled the oil pressure switch out to see if it has a calibration screw which of course it doesn't. I reinstalled it and it actually works the way it is supposed to except for dumping oil out now.
Friends have offered me a few to try.

John G to the rescue
It has the adjustment screw and is dated 1 58.
I hope this works.
When I was in Hessisch Oldendorf in 2013 there was a fellow with a whole case of switches. I bought one and then sold it a few years later. If I could go back and whisper in my ear I would say buy the whole box.

Perfect!
Let's hope it still works.
Look, I'm not talking nonsense. :)
My Oval, bought new by my parents, still has such switch (0,3-0,6 kg/cm²) with an adjustment screw.
The adjustment screw does not affect the correct operation of the oil pressure switch.
You only set the oil pressure light to go out at low pressure.
This often happened when the customer complained that the light was too long on at idle.
(Before changing this setting, you must ensure that the engine oil pressure is correct.
Normal oil pressure when the engine is warm and idling min. 0,5 kg/cm².
At 70°C/158°F oil temperature and 2500 rpm min. 2,0 kg/cm²).

Good info. I don't think any of us would have figured that out without translation. I don't have the light flickering issue because both engines have been rebuilt and are using the later/larger oil pumps. If I ever run across that, it's nice info to have. Cheers! |

This gives me a little thrill:
It works as it should and it doesn't leak. When I put the original engine together the switch that came with it did not work, would not shut the light off. I installed the one from my spare engine and it worked for a year or so and then started leaking oil. I then bought a new one from CIP. Almost immediately it failed and wouldn't turn the light off at idle. Investigating it I found the terminal was loose, it started working properly but started leaking a lot. Now I have one dated 1 58 that, cross your fingers, works and doesn't leak.
Another bit of good news: I bought an NOS vacuum advance from Frederik
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2333581
Installed it yesterday, really dresses up the engine bay
Ever since I built this car it has had a little flat spot off idle, that seems to be gone. A win I think.
On another note. I plan to go on a bit of a drive starting Sunday and I wanted 12 volts in the car to charge electronics while I drove. I had built an inverter years ago and turned my electronics shop upside down looking for it. Nowhere to be found, then I remembered....
It was still in the car, I had disconnected it but left it in place.
Connected it up and...
Sweet, this will work.

Don, are you driving all the way from Winnipeg to Vancouver? That is a nice long haul. :)
And, what was the cause of your lifters getting stuck in your (other) motor? Maybe I missed that finding. |

I haven't finished dismantling the engine but I got the lifters out and they were perfect. I actually did not see anything wrong with the motor. Big puzzle.
OTOH
Picked up some hardware today:

Great work on the car Don. I was at the Great Canadian show yesterday with my 54 ragtop and it was awesome that you drove your 54 half way across Canada to be here. It was cool to see your car in person and nice for you to bring home an award. I went back to your car a couple times hoping to find you but that didn’t work out. It was a really good turnout with lots of amazing VW’s to check out. Safe travels on your journey home.
