Hello, any thoughts on the best tool for removing the oil filler nut? There is a typical "tool" just for his with two fins that fit into the groves of the nut. However, I have seen an internal pipe wrench used to get this nut off. Is one better than the other?

Thank you and have a great day.

I have both.

The internal pipe wrench works better.

cut a piece of steel sheet of appropriate thickness to fit the slot, then use a crescent wrench to turn the steel you made. mif not too tight, the nut can be loosened this way

Bug On!

I use this, but I’m careful not to let it drop in too far. It works well.

My pipe wrench

It works better than the tool.
The tool only works if everything is in near perfect shape and it's not stuck in place.

I had an old cheap socket that happened to fit exactly into the inner dia. I cut slots across the diameter and welded a thick nail which protruded outside the dia (after the head and tip were cut off). That tool works well with my Milwaukee 18V impact wrench to remove stubbornly stuck ones.

I used a piece of 1/8" bar stock with notches cut into it and loosened/tightened nut with a crescent wrench.

I ground off the tips of an old paddle bit and used that.

it all depends how tight it is...i have the "real tool" and its difficult to hold it completely straight so it doesnt jump out of the notch if you're using a ratchet and extension..and you dont want to knock a piece off the edge of the slot and have it disappear down the the generator stand on an engine that you're not tearing down for a full rebuild....therefore i generally use it with an impact gun to loosen them...i think the internal pipe wrench style should be a little more user friendly...way back when i made a one like the one donco735 suggested and it twisted up like a pretzel...they can really get locked up in there after half a century or so

Me too, I tried that before when I had no tool and all it did was twist the metal and not unscrew it.

I use a tool I purchased 20 plus years ago. Made by Sp Tools. It utilizes a 1/2” drive extension and ratchet. Works awesome and never had an issue!

I have the same tool but when the top of the gland nut is not perfect or rusted, the tool barely works.

The internal pipe wrench works everytime.

yup ...same one i have jimbo

I went to this one after my stock style one kept coming loose.

Ps, that tool/nut looks like a winner.

Is that a 17mm allen?

I tried the shit slot tool. It sucked!

Ordered the pipe nipple tool and got the filler nut/bolt out. A little heat helps here.

When I tried to install the nut/bolt with nipple remover in the new filler tower. I stripped the threads on the old tower.

So I ordered a filler nut/bolt and install tool from CSP. This is a a very high quality part!

Good Luck.

@ps2375 - Don't you run the risk of dropping that allen bit down the oil tube?

If you look at the pictures the hex only fit in so far. It can't fall in.

Someone was way ahead of you.

Now that's a slick alternative!
