View original topic: Spare tire carrier identification

There appears to be at least three variants of the spare tire carrier "clamshell".
1. The most common is for the 185-195 14" steel wheels and tires #251801901D
2. The slightly larger, I guess, version for 205 14" alloy wheels #255801901A
3. And the elusive SA version that will carry a Rhein or Starburst 15" part #BCR801901 or 22S804001B. I don't know which number is correct.

The question, how are they identified? There does not appear to be a part number stamped as is commonly done by VW.

The way to identify the two US options is by the latch at the front the 185/195 is flat while the 205 had about a 3/4" offset on the bolt mount.

This shows the taller tang for the 205 tire version.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Since I have Rhein wheels I am particularly interested in compatibility.

The tire is the limiting factor.
The diameter, width, and profile are keys.
The model of the wheel isn't so important other than how it affects the dimensions of the tire. The width of the rim can make a big difference with respect to tire contact in the 2 key places.

interesting. i swapped out my munged up steel wheel carrier for one off of a Carat with Al wheels... never noticed the drop for the bolt but i'm sure it is there. have to think of something to do with all that extra room!

I have a 90 Carat that came with 205/70R14 on alloys. I upgraded to 205/65R15 on Rhein rims and the spare fits fine in the clamshell.

Also, if I recall correctly, these two primary versions on USA vans also came with different "bars" that go above the tire and also form the hinge pin for the clamshell. I recall taking photos in years ago when I had 2 varieties side-by-side, but don't have access to those photos at the moment.
