The number mentioned on the case makes me doubt when this was produced.
What i want to know if this case in the aluminium one.
Anyone tips how to recognise one?
VW stopped using Aluminium on 19-01-1951.

I believe the aluminum cases have a thinner case half flange than a 36hp magnesium case. Pull the pulley and compare it. |

this is 2-070441 ??? that engine number makes no sense, the gen stand looks machined and restamped, there is another number below it. probably remanufactured or recnditioned and then somebody stamped the VIN/ chassis number . |

I learned yesterday that
1- = KDF
2- = Kubel
5- = Type82e
7- = Typ7 Schwimmwagen
This is a restamped crankcase with a Kubel number. |

might want to ask in the split forum.
1- does not mean kdf. it is 40-55 beetle. so part right.
2- and 5- are kubel and type82e I get those mixed up.
schwimmwagen is 6- as far as I know. never seen 7-
any way I think it is re-stamped because it would
have 6 point stars on both ends of the #'s
does it have the cogwheel stamps under the
pushrod tube area ? and check under the
crank pulley for casting dates. like someone else
said. by the oil pump. it does have 25hp heads . :?
does not have the nub on the case to bolt on the
oil filler .so the case is pre 56 .strange |

Thanks for your answer!
Can you verify this?
Someone told me on Facebook that if the case has a square in the casting opposite to the oil cooler it is an aluminium crankcase.
The long oil dipstick shaft indicates the crankcase to be older than 1950.
So certainly not a later style crankcase up to 1956. |

well it is 25hp for sure. the casting date behind the
pulley is the only way to verify the year. did you find
the cogwheel stamp? they used that till 49 on the
case and a lot of parts. that will narrow it down.
aluminum ended in 51 sometime .so jury is still out.
I will take pics of my 46 case for comparo.
my casting date is on the generator stand.
on the other side. not where the are like
later ones. like your pic. strange the circles
are there and no dates? the oil fill area looks
strange as well may be the angle. more pics!

as common back then one side was cast in feb. the other side cast in may.
both haves are stamped the same # on the top .that was added after they machined it together. case # dates it to may. |
