Thankfully no big ones. i had a giant fuel leak last week from the tank. It ate the paint on the seam sealer on the bulkhead BUT, not on the steel which is good. That master series stuff is tough!

Chickensoup Mon Dec 13, 2021 7:32 pm

holy shit that be some overlap!

i replaced the brake lines, as well as the MC spacers and bolts with SS ones, but no pictures as the pan is too filthy for me not to be embarrassed

then i started nickel coating some solex parts. the steel pieces would look perfect if i had prepped the surface better.

Ceckert64 Mon Dec 13, 2021 8:17 pm

Looks good! :D

I also found out why my door gap was wonky. Just sag. I pushed up on the door and they returned back to perfect.

I also did some light polishing. Forgot some pics

Chickensoup Sat Jan 15, 2022 5:11 pm

Yay. Pop out time.

Do the 65 pop outs have 65 specific knobs? I believe my pop outs are from a later car.

Ceckert64 Sat Jan 15, 2022 5:33 pm

Iím curious how the Pop ours go. I have to do them on my Squareback soon

sportin-wood Sat Jan 15, 2022 6:28 pm

TS user notsnarb provided me a good popout overhaul .pdf document. Message me your email address and I'll share it with you. It's for 1965 and up beetle popouts.

Chickensoup Sat Jan 15, 2022 8:11 pm

thanks Mr. Wood! PM sent.

Im thinking ill do a mini or possibly in depth write up on the pop out restoration. I will be nickel coating the latches as well. will be intersting to see a side by side comparison against chrome.

i made a WW order.

lets just say... my thumbs are broken

Chickensoup Mon Jan 17, 2022 5:09 pm

Still no luck with the new tools and silicon spray

The seals... I found in a box of engine parts I bought. I have no idea how old they are. Could they're age be the issue?

I also did some polishing today.

Oops. Well the writing is gone lol.

The trim on the pop outs is being fussy

Question, what material is the pop out trim? Aluminum? Chrome? SS?

Thanks

Chickensoup Tue Jan 18, 2022 4:37 pm

Yet more polishing. I didn't know i needed so many different polishes lol.

Gotta nickel plate the hardware

Yeah, I goofed. Hurt my thumb quite a bit too.

For some reason wasn't getting notifications again...

Sure a lot of progress, glad seeing it.

Bummer about the reverse lamp.

Is the reason for all this extra polishing to kill time, relax, or both? :P

Oh geez!  If has not sent out yet, what about calling them and see if reduce the number, especially since fairly clear a mistake. In the past I was disorganized so have doubles.

FWIW pre 65 Pop-outs are Aluminum that is clear anodized. I would think post 65 are the same. If you polish them bright then you remove the anodize and they will tarnish faster. For mine i just hand polished to clean them up.

Are you hinges tight? I found that i will have to drill mine to the next size.

Regarding plating your parts. I am finding 6 months later that i needed alot thicker plating on many parts as they are oxidizing fast from being outside on my chassis. (covered but still outside) I had difficulty regulating things so the parts would not burn when plating and errored on the side of too thin plating. I also used zinc so maybe nickel will be better for you.

Yeah, I think im going to have to remove the anodizing. And then polish and clear or something.

I had the burning issue as well at first. Very annoying. My plating is decent now. THE METAL MUST BE PREPPED PERFECTLY, for good adhesion and shine. I wish my plating was a bit thicker tho.

The lesson I learned... is become a sensey in electrolysis... or go big and plate electroless.

The actual hinge is the 1 part im missing.

I got my WW order and I only got 1 set of pop put screws  im confused lol. I'll email them later.

Adriel Rowley Fri Jan 21, 2022 6:27 pm

Did you contact them about reducing the dozen?

How many did you need?

raydog Sat Jan 22, 2022 10:21 am

Not seeing where you messed up on the order. You have 12 door hinge screws ordered, which you received, and one set of pop out screws which you received.
