Yup. I agree whole heartedly.
About the only thing I'd worry about is what they did to put the later engine in. Did they start a 12 volt conversion? Swap out the flywheel for an O ringed 6 volt flywheel to keep it all 6 volt? And if so, did they swap out the big alloy cooling fan shroud? These will be questions you'll have to look into.

Your squareback, most likely was brought back to the US by a Serviceman/Woman. I say that due to your proximity to AFBases. There are lots of Euro spec VWs in Texas. Coupled with a moderate climate, nice examples like this pop up. They were either a direct purchase from a dealer in Europe or was part of a Tourist program that featured a new VW with a vacation package.

Most VW's don't have their original motor. They are so easy to pull out like batteries, most previous owners did as well as dealer/service shops.
