When I drive over a bump or pothole, I get a loud clunking sound from the rear right side of my '69 convertible. I had a friend drive, while I sat in the back and looked to see if it was anything visible that was making the sound, but no luck. Interestingly, I remember being perplexed by the same sound when I had a '79 beetle convertible, many years ago.
Anyone have any ideas? A bad shock maybe?
Thanks in advance, Mike |

Hi Mike,
Check the rear body mount which is in the wheel well. You will see it once you jack the car up and remove the wheel. Try prying between the body and the mount to see if there is slop. CV joint? Check your shock mounts too.

Also check your pivot bolt, they have been known to back out. One member stated he drove about 30K minus the bolt. |

I posted a pic of the location of the rear body bolt in the Ghia Coupe section about a month ago. Go to the Ghia Gallery and search. I was even kind enough to remove the rear quarter panel for the shot!
Sounds like the CV joints if you ask me. |

I saw your pics - so is the body bolt and the shock tower bolt the same thing? |

No, different animals. Look at the other pics that show the side view and you should be able to pick out the shock tower mounts. |
