Seems reasonable about the revs, I'll look into that.

AFAIK the DMF+clutch assembly was the same as is used everywhere else with the VR6. It was an aftermarket replacement unit but I'll have to dig for the label.

All good things must come to an end - in this case for a great reason, moving overseas. So Iglaaq must find a new home. I'll list it here for a couple weeks exclusively.

(Pix in the ad taken when I picked it up from the detailer today, should have had that done years ago!)

Hey PG,

Don't know if you remember my username, but we met this past spring when you let me test drive your 5spd conversion to help me decide on a similar path with my van. I'm about to embark on that conversion myself this winter - spent the past few months gathering the DYA trans and its related components.

Glad to hear your move overseas is proceeding - last we talked you seemed excited by it and I was wondering if/when it was going to happen. Good luck - we'll miss you at the Samba and especially as one of the few 5spd converts in the late model EV world.

Good luck with the sale - I'll be watching with curiosity (and probably cheering a bit) from the sidelines. Hopefully your 993 also found a comfortable new home (let me know if it hasn't  )

For any prospective buyers: I drove this van several months ago before it was for sale in order to help me decide if the 5spd conversion was a viable path for my van. While I did not climb over the van with a purchaser's eye, the 5spd conversion is well integrated and was done as VW would have. The only caveat to that statement is that an Auto Trans position switch emulator (as developed by EuroTec, also here in the community) is used to restore functionality to the ABS and traction control. VW would likely have baked that into the coding of the ECU but alas, that option was not provided by VW.

Between the upgrade to 5spd MT and PG's well documented mechanical rejuvenation efforts on this van, this is a great opportunity to get a mechanically well sorted Eurovan at a pretty reasonable price point.

Of course! Nice to hear from you, and glad you're making progress on your conversion.

The Eurovan is the last of our 5 cars to hit the block. It's quite a change...

@paddygarcia, if I was in a different season life-wise, I'd be calling you. Would love to have a manual setup like this in our stable. Hopefully the next owner appreciates what they are getting with this setup.

Also, FWIW, I appreciate that you are "listing" it here before listing it elsewhere. :) If no one here grabs it, do please let us know where you list it — I'd be interested in watching that auction.

May it go well!

Thanks, IN.

If it doesn't sell here it'll go to Bring trailer in the spring. I'd prefer it sells here...

When I saw this pic, it saddened me a bit. It feels like your VW hobby is over and you're moving onto another one.

Will you be resurrecting your VW life in your new country?

At any rate, I wish you well in your future Expat adventures.

Well, never say never but as of now there are no plans for cars in the Netherlands. We have a small garage there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see something there eventually. Idle hands are the devil's tools...

The mic really emphasizes the sounds of rough roads, it's not nearly as bad as it sounds...

Nothing panned out in The Samba's classifieds so Iglaaq is up on Bring A Trailer: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2003-volkswagen-westfalia-mv-weekender/

PG - do you happen to remember any details on the DMF/Clutch assembly you used? Part number, fitment info to other VAG products, etc.?

I'm wanting to start with a fresh Flywheel/Clutch system and am having a hard time sourcing the OEM DMF here in the states.

paddygarcia Tue Apr 08, 2025 6:57 pm

The one supplied with my kit was an aftermarket unit and didn't have a part number, sorry. 7zap says it's 021105264C

A couple of suggestions: try rob/vwjunkie who may be able to supply a part, check one of the (mostly Latvian) VW dealers on EBay, and if all else fails I'll see if I can source it here in the Netherlands :-)

So far no luck using the OE part number you quoted nor the Luk equivalents:
417 0003 10 or 600 0001 00 (both complete clutch kits with DMF, one kit does not include the slave cylinder and the other does). I've reached out to Luke/Schaeffler Global to see if they can help. I'll try Rob as you suggested.

In the mean time, I'm looking into SMF options as well but can't find anything in the stock 220mm size with 10 bolt pattern. Might have to see if the 228mm fits from the late mk3 early mk4 Golf/Jetta 12V 2.8L.

paddygarcia Wed Apr 09, 2025 3:55 am

SMF would be a good option, seems more likely to find replacement parts. That reminds me of this thread, lots of potentially useful info: https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/project-lucille-eurovan-vr6-build-and-5-speed-conversion.7226272/

The slave/TO bearing seems to be common on ebay, pretty sure it's the same for the TDI.

Maybe try autospares.eu on ebay, I've bought a number of things from them.

So I modified the relay itself: the black wire runs from the ground side of the relay coil and bypasses the electronics. Marked it so that future me knows it shouldn't be replaced with a stock PNP relay. Starter turns nicely but will have to wait until the radiator is back in to fire it up.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack but I Just wanted to say thanks to paddy garcia for this one.

When I did my conversion I just tapped into the 175 relay socket with a 5 pole relay, problem solved.
Then, this week I had a user of my transmission emulator asking some questions about how to get the van started when the TCU thinks it's in D because of the jumper I supply with the kit taking the place of the park/neutral switch.
I decided to do this mod to the 175 relay I had which worked great. Excellent solution and my favorite, a simple one. Anyway, passed along the info to another EV owner. Happy day!

Never a hijack with good info :-)
