I recently came in possession of a Gol cooling kit that I want to mount on an 1915 engine I'm going to build somewhere next year. I know they have a really tiny oil cooer but as I don't have it I want to go remote mounted. I don't really know where the best place is to put it. under the car next to the trans? behind my kamei frond lip? somewhere under the nose of the car? the car is a euro spec 1973 1303 known in the use as super beetle's.

Keep it in the back. You don't want all that oil line going to the front of the car and back. Placing the cooler over or next to the transaxle will do fine, if you even need it. IDK where you are located, but under normal driving conditions, a stock doghouse oil cooler will be adequate for a 1915.

Don't use it, its designed for a forward facing front engine and they have been proven not to cool adequately in a rear engine car.

i want to use the gol cooler just for the looks and thought to keep the temps down to go with the remote mounted cooler

They work if you buy the right one and keep the lines short. I put mine drivers side under package tray. Filter under driver fender. Look up CBR dual pass cooler.

did you do all plumbing in AN lines? isn't that a bit overkill and expensive?

Above the tranny. The shorter your lines the better.

Does it get enough cool air above the transmission?

What is the downside of longer lines but more cool air on let’s say a front mounted oil cooler?

that is what I also was wondering as the 911 from that era also had their oil coolers up frond also you have a lot more oil in your system

Long lines = dry starts. The lines are about 40 each. Well worth the piece of mind. How much is a new engine when your oil line bursts??

but why did almost all rear engined cars from that era have oil coolers in the frond? and couldn't that be fixed with an electric oil pump that primes the oil system just before you start the engine like an electric fuel pump?

Dont see the dry start either.
The thermostate and filter can be located close to the engine.
So When cold you have a short circuit.
Only when warmed up oil will flow to the cooler.
Well not entirely as most thermostats let some flow to the cooler even when cold...

AN fittings have advantages and dont always have to be expensive. You can use cheap brass pushlock fittings w/rubber hose, anodized aluminum pushlock, braided hose with screw together aluminum fittings, or fully crimped Teflon hose like in his pics. Viking is running one of the most expensive type 1 NA race motors you can build that will fit into a street car. In his case, the cost is justified.

You guys referencing 911s fail to take into account that system was a drysump system that held 11-14 liters of oil.

I spent over $500 on AN fittings on my turbo engine. Cheap insurance.

It is just not needed in your climate or with your engine. Just because you have it does not mean you need to use it. I actually removed my remote cooler.

They have no idea that they are talking about a dry sump system that holds 12 quarts of oil. Apples and oranges.

That is a remote filter... where is the cooler? Or am I missing something? Why the extra loop in the lines?
